Rumor, and Innuendo can destroy a career!!

Rumor, and Innuendo can destroy a career!!

Yup, it is true, it does not matter how good the facts say you are, how good the stats say you are, all that matters is what the "in crowd" "the click" think. It can even be and out and out lie, but if that group of people who are on the "in" think it is true, or propagate it, you are done. Even if you are the top performer in the company.

It is scary to think that in companies. managers would rather just make the "in" crowd happy then find out the truth, or stand up to them. It has gotten so bad, that the "in" crowd, which usually consists of a bunch of average performers who have managed to stay in a particular company for awhile because they are good at being fake and phony, can actually determine everything. Now what really causes this is a bunch of weak managers, who would rather just get rid of the "target" of the "in" group, then actually do the right thing, and stop the silly stuff. But do not be fooled into thinking the "in" crowd or as I call them the "click" do not know what they are doing. In most cases it is very calculated, and is designed to target someone who is performing better than them, or maybe who they think is getting paid more than them. Basically the target is getting or doing something the click, feels they cannot do or should be getting, and rather than learning how to do it, or working harder to get whatever it is they think they should get. They would rather find ways to alienate those that do get it.

So what to do, that is a good question, the best thing to do is to try your best to get along, and allow your success to stay between you and your manager. Believe me this will not guarantee anything. If they cannot find anything based on fact to cause trouble with, they will just make it up. The only sure fire way to not have this happen to you, is to ensure you have a strong manager and support system.

The morale of the story is, be careful, there is always a click in every company, and all you can do is the best you can and hope you have a strong manager to support you. Remember the more successful you are the more of a target you will become. Everyone wants to knock down the top dog. Some do it the right way with hard work, others try to do it the wrong way. It will be your strength, the strength of your manger and the company that will determine the outcome. So make smart choices.

Most managers appease the mediocre because most managers are mediocre themselves.  The way to rise to the top in many (not all) companies is to be agreeable and not too daring.  I would argue that if you disdain mediocrity yet find yourself in a mediocre company under a mediocre manager, the best course of action is not to get along, but to move along...to a new place that is more in line with your values.   That may not be the best course of action for everyone, but it has served me well throughout my professional life.
