Snap Judgement: Why Snapchat is Bang on the Money with Latest Recruitment Tactic

Proving that a billion-dollar evaluation isn't everything, this week it emerged that super-startup, Snapchat, is just like any other company when it comes to finding and recruiting top tech talent.

For these guys, too, the struggle is real.

Luckily for Snapchat, they have some seriously creative minds on the team who realised that in the war for talent, the picture-sharing app company had one very handy secret weapon at its disposal.

With the employees of multi billion-dollar ride-sharing app company, Uber, set firmly in its sights, Snapchat took aim, leveraging its own technology and taking "targeted recruitment" to a whole new level.

Forbes reveals how "A source who works in Uber’s headquarter buildings in San Francisco noticed a new geolocation filter when using Snapchat on Wednesday, which showed an attempt by Snapchat to recruit Uber employees. “This place driving you mad?” read the filter, which can be applied to Snapchat photos before a user sends a disappearing message to friends. The photo filter, which can only be found if a user is in the vicinity of Uber headquarters, also shows a web address to Snapchat’s jobs page and drawings of Snapchat’s trademark ghost driving a cab while making frustrated and sad faces."

Bold, brilliant, and a blatant attempt to lure highly-skilled individuals away from their current employer.

A sly move, for sure, but hey, all's fair in love and recruitment, right?

Snapchat is also reported to have applied the geo-filters to other Bay Area tech giants including Airbnb, Twitter and Pinterest.

How successful this endeavour will be in terms of the number of new hires Snapchat lands as a direct result of the initiative remains to be seen.

But you can't fault the company's ingenuity.

In an age where employees hold the position of power, and the key to attracting top talent is creative, candidate-focused content, Snapchat's approach checks all the right boxes.

However, they're not the first business to realise the recruiting potential of the picture-sharing app.
