Interviews can be a very stressful time yet it doesn’t have to be that way when you understand what the objective is from the employer's perspective. Let me explain.

Employers are trying to hire candidates that match their requirement. They usually take time beforehand and make a list of required key skills and nice to have skills. Questions are usually formulated to
access and rate the information that will be obtained in an interview.
What the employer is actually trying to do is to take as much risk out
of the hire as possible. They are looking for compatible candidates that
match their required skill sets.

My recommendation is to listen carefully to the question that you are being asked by the employer. Keep your answers in a positive light and provide examples that match their questions. However, if you run into a
question that you don’t possess exactly what they are looking for, then
be honest but also provide an answer that brings out your skills that
can be easily transferred. For example, a person may not have direct
experience working with SOX but they may have experience working with
COSO frameworks which complements the SOX framework. They can be honest
and say that even though they don’t have direct experience with SOX,
they do have experience working within the SOX framework of COSO. The
employer can then decide whether that constitutes as a match and thus
have the risk eliminated from the hire.

Remember the more risk that is eliminated from the hiring process, the greater chance of being hired.
