With all the current economic woes, I am constantly asked by.....well everyone, "when will it get better". Lots of predictions are being made, but the bottom line is, we don't know. So let me share a story about tough times getting better;

3 years ago I was laid off (terminated, downsized, pick the term) from a large corporate entity. I could see it coming, so months prior I had incorporated myself, just in case termination was in the cards. I set up shop in my home and within 2 weeks had a contract gig and several contingency searches (which I filled without the use of job boards).

Now, why/how did this happen, was it my large network -- partially, was it my planning -- maybe, (although my wife may disagree with my planning skills), or was it the fact that I had 3 daughters under the age of 3 and a wife who coins herself a domestic engineer (stay at home mom) -- mostly?

The point is I never quit, not because it didn't cross my mind, but because I COULD NOT QUIT! So I just want to encourage everyone out there, during these times, keep going, never quit! It will get better, but don't depend on the economy "to make it better", go forth and make it better.

In the immortal words of Paul "Bear" Bryant --
"Never quit. It is the easiest cop-out in the world. Set a goal and don't quit until you attain it. When you do attain it, set another goal, and don't quit until you reach it. Never quit"

Glad that you had a back-up plan in place, Alex. It is important not to give up, set goals and work on those daily activities that will help you complete your goals.

I'd like to add one more recommendation to your post. Misery loves company, so stay clear of those fair-weather friends who are negative and not supportive during the tough times. Connect with those who are resourceful and focused on finding solutions.

Thank you Jenny, this is spot on and such an important part. I always say, if Granny (or granma, mama whichever someone called her) said it, it must be true, and my Granny always said to surrond myself with positive people!
