The Client Side - What is your Fatal Flaw?

Some years ago I saw a TV show where one of the characters had to write an essay on their "fatal flaw". For some reason that stuck with me and I put some real thought into what my fatal flaw is. It was well worth the time and through the process I determined that what I viewed as my "fatal flaw" or the characteristic that I could not change and that caused me the most trouble was also my greatest strength. The characteristic that I came up with is tunnel vision. I have it, there is no doubt about it and I could point to specific situations personally and in business where it caused problems. However, in reviewing my tunnel vision experiences I also determined that it helped me greatly in other situations and that I was very comfortable in my tunnel vision.

So what to do? I decided that the best thing to do would be to harness the tunnel vision and use it to my advantage. I worked on making changes in my business and my life that allowed me to use that strength for the good aspects and block out the bad aspects. This has become a real cornerstone in my basic foundation. In challenging times like these in the recruiting business, I think it is imperative to determine what you are good at, what you are not so good at, what you enjoy doing, and what you don't enjoy doing and build your business and life around those things. I've had several conversations recently with people looking for answers in this economy and the theme we keep coming back to is to look back at what you have had success with and what you enjoy doing and focus your energy on those things. Know your strengths, know your weaknesses and make it work for you.
