The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same

Recently, I was looking over some of my recruiting material from about 14+ years ago. I reviewed all the sections about sourcing candidates (from cold calls to referrals), picking up job leads from newspapers (remember those) to references and many other "old school" techniques. Here is what I realized; Nothing today is really NEW!

Think about it; what "inventions" are really new? Data storage; sure the way we store the data has changed from cave drawings to servers, but it is still data storage. Communication; well, a cell phone sure beats a smoke signal but it is still communication.

The point is we may have many new methods of networking, tons of new sourcing methods and more new forms of communication than we really need, but the basics are still the same.

My advice to all recruiters; don't get caught in just the social aspects of recruiting without understanding the basics of the recruiting game.

In short, technology will never replace tenacity, the phone and good old fashioned customer service and sales skills, despite what the 'gurus' say.

Great reminder that there is always a person behind the process. The process doesn't stand on its own!
