Interesting thing happened to me this week. I ran into an old colleague in a coffee shop (that's not the interesting thing) but he said something to me which resonated a bit. He said "Nuroo.... man, I feel I know more about you now that I did when we worked together, with your blogs, your twittering and your facebook stuff."

We laughed it off, however it got me thinking. "That's pretty sad isn't it?" Was I not open enough? Was our communication that poor? or is it just a comment on the brand new world2.0 now? Where information is more easily shared and found, and sometimes given to you even when you don't want it.

Has the world for communication changed forever?

I personally believe in the "modern disconnect"--a world where we have a false sense of one another thanks to technology. We read each others blogs, tweets, discussion posts, text each other, IM each other, comment each other but how many times in life do you really connect with someone? People may think they know me by reading all the information I throw out on the internet but really there's a lot of blanks to fill and and people can get really creative filling in those blanks. Modern means of communication, with all of it's speed and convenience, is no substitute for actual human connection. Individuals are at once vast and unique and cannot be summed up in a matter of tweets. If you don't believe me, ask Walt Whitman:
"I am of old and young, of the foolish as much as the wise,
Regardless of others, ever regardful of others,
Maternal as well as paternal, a child as well as a man,
Stuff'd with the stuff that is coarse and stuff'd with the stuff
that is fine...I resist anything better than my own diversity."

"Song of Myself," 16, Lines 1-4 & 20
