The Truth: How Jobseekers REALLY Feel About Seasonal Hiring

I love this time of year. The air is cooler, new boots and jackets can be worn, and I get excited to embrace some of my favorite things about the fall months: Halloween, roast pumpkin, leaves changing color and, of course, stuffing at Thanksgiving.

But, now I’m involved in the world of tech recruitment, I’ve come to associate fall with another event: seasonal hiring.

This is just the start of the busy season in the customer services, retail and hospitality industries. Over the next few months, managers find themselves short-staffed, employees want more help to deal with frenzied customers and restaurants are packed out. We know that hiring managers are looking for seasonal help to ease their load, but we were interested in how jobseekers themselves felt. Would they want something more permanent and less fleeting? Would they want to commit to a company knowing it may not lead anywhere?

At Apploi, we surveyed 250 jobseekers, and found the results overwhelmingly positive with regard to their thoughts on seasonal hiring. Take a look at this infograph, which shows our results.

 

 

52 percent of jobseekers are looking for extra work over the holidays, possibly because their outgoing costs go up. Additionally, 32 percent of jobseekers are currently looking for a second or third job, meaning a seasonal job would work well with their part-time schedule. Most job seekers today hold that flexibility is key (according to 42 percent of people we surveyed) and seasonal work allows for that. Plus, it’s a great way for a jobseeker to get to know the culture of a company to determine if it’s right for them long term.

Plenty of companies are doing their seasonal hiring right now. It's time for the job seekers and hiring managers to connect.

It's so interesting to see that flexibility is the main priority for most people, I believe in non-seasonal, full-time work as well.  It makes sense that more and more employers will begin to accommodate.

Hi Natalie, I totally agree. Everyone is so busy today and time really is the prized commodity -- having a flexible job and an employer who understands the importance of that is so much more beneficial than other perks.
