Two years experience in Recruiting: Zero Years in Blogging

Social media has become a crucial part of my job in recruiting; today I take on a new challenge of blogging.

My name is Amy, I am and agency recruiter in the Minneapolis Metro area. I have been recruiting for entry level full time jobs for two years in my experience I have found that there are many attributes to a resume that will determine whether a recruiter or company will call you. Today I want to share my tips for writing a resume that people will notice.

1. Organization. Spend time organizing your resume; the most important information needs to be readily available for the reader as they do not have the time to search for it. Make sure the reader knows your educational history, work experience, and the highlights of your career. These are the foundation of your experience and are what make you right for the job.

2. Be Specific. Telling me that you are hard working, driven, and outgoing do not mean anything to me unless you can back them up with specific details. The more general people are on the resume the more of an impression I get that they have not accomplished a lot. Tell me why you are hard working; have you held a job working 30+ hours a week, went to school full time, and participating in a collegiate activity? That shows me you are hard working!

3. Keep personal information to a minimum. All too many times I have come across resumes that have turned me off due to giving to much personal information. I am not interested in looking at a picture of you, knowing what sports you hold season tickets to, or where you go to the gym. I care about your qualifications and what makes you the right person for the job so please focus on those things.

4. Use bullet points. This is a personal preference but I am more inclined to read through a resume that has organized their achievements in bullet points. It allows me to make the best use of my time and also to easily read your responsibilities in your past jobs.

5. Do not send me a novel; this is a resume. The last tip I have is to keep things simple and to the point. I do not spend time reading through multi page resumes. I want a highlight of who you are not a life story. The ability to edit a resume also tells me a lot about the candidate. The candidate that define their strengths clearly and concisely are the candidates i want to work with in the job hunt.

Keep in mind these tips when formulating your resume. Everyone has their own style but keeping these things in mind will help you put together an effective resume that will get you a call back!
