Will you have more experience than your fellow candidate? How about technical skills? It’s a constant battle as a job seeker to be remarkable in an interview. You want to highlight your relevant strengths, but what will take you further in the mind of the hiring manager?
Be the solution to their problem. Find out what needs improving at the company and come up with some ideas to pitch during your interview. According to a recent Forbes article by George Bradt, presenting a solution is the best thing you can do to stand out; and there are three steps in the process.
The first step is to focus on the other person: the company you are interviewing with. Make sure you have an idea of their goals and values. Understanding the company culture is the basis for knowing what you can do to contribute.
Next, speak to their unanswered problem. If you can find out any struggles the company is having before you interview, brainstorm solutions to those. If not, ask the hiring manager and be prepared to respond. Show them you have, and will, take initiative.
Finally, be the best solution. Help them understand how much you want to cure the organization’s headaches. Make clear which of your strengths you can apply to remedy any pain that the organization might be having.
Focusing on the company’s issues and how you can fix them is a great way to stand out among similar applicants. What if they don’t like your solutions? Your enthusiasm and determination will serve as a competitive advantage. It’s a win-win!
Do you agree with the following statement? If you don’t have the solution, you are the problem. Tell us what you think.
