Why is it difficult to recruit for marketers?

Despite rising unemployment, employers and staffing firms continue to place an increasing volume of job ads for marketing positions each month, making it one of the most difficult jobs to recruit for.  In May, more than 24,000 new ads were posted, the highest volume in the past 4 years. Although slightly down, more than 23,000 ads were placed in June, still representing a 23% increase from 2010.  According to the Hiring Scale™, there are approximately 6 potential candidates in the national workforce for every new job ad posted during June.  Some areas will experience even more difficult conditions than the average.  For example, the New York metro area experienced the highest hiring demand in June and averages 5 potential candidates per open position.

As of June 30, more than 2,200 job ads for marketers in the US were still active after 60 days.  As these positions remain unfilled, recruiters will need to keep job ads online longer and spend more time recruiting potential candidates.  Recruiters will also need to compete fiercely to attract candidates for these openings.

There are a large number of other companies looking to fill this same type of position (more than 6,700). Not only are there more than 6,700 companies looking for this same position, most are looking to fill multiple positions. For example, Microsoft, Verizon and AT&T each have more than 300 Marketing Manager active job ads.

<Visualize my weary, knowing nod> - this sure rings true to me. It's a bear trying to hire great marketers these days in Boston.
