Hat tip: Jim Stroud

Crowdsourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated agent (usually an employee) and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call. Look for the book by Jeff Howe, the man responsible for identifying the term, this August.

What's interesting about crowd sourcing is that it works in some places, but not in others. A lot of companies are attempting to use crowdsourcing to cut costs, but that's not what they're good at it.

Solving problems, yes. Building quality anything? It's harder than it seems.

Generally speaking, Jim, I think when companies try and apply a Thing 2.0 thing to fix a Thing 1.0 issue things go rather poorly. Others are simply not very good at anything they do hence a) the defensive cutting of costs, and b) their obvious failure to understand the most efficient ways of doing it.
