Many students, particularly those attending university, are now choosing to get a part-time job alongside their studies.

Due to the increased cost of living, lots of undergraduates are increasingly finding that they are unable to have the quality of life they were hoping for simply by surviving on their student loan.

Others without the luxury of a loan to pay for their tuition fees must balance their studies with part-time or even full-time employment, in order to gain the qualifications they desire.

How to find a part-time job

Many University students also find success by joining local recruitment agencies as soon as they move to campus.  This is a great way to work with a specialist consultant, who can use their experience and network to find the right job for you.

Many student unions are also very helpful when it comes to finding part-time employment for those studying at University.

What kind of jobs are suitable for students?

Although they may already be qualified to take on more taxing work, many university students choose to enter positions which don't depend too much on specific qualifications; such as catering or retail sales jobs, thus allowing them to dedicate the majority of their efforts on their education.

Many students also choose to take bar work as the hours are unlikely to conflict with study group or lecture times.

Advice for student jobseekers

It is advisable for university students who are looking for part-time work to begin their search as early into the educational year as possible. Undergraduates in particular are often competing with hundreds of like-minded candidates and it is not unusual for the most popular student jobs to be filled before the lecture calendar even begins.

Students in competitive industries such as journalism, law or fashion often attend work placements throughout their studies in order to build contacts and, ultimately, secure a full-time position within their chosen field.
