If You Build It Candidates Will Come - Mobile Edition

I recently had an experience that I thought I would share with those of you who are interested in trying to take advantage of the growing demographic of mobile users who are job seekers...

I recently stopped at one of our local fast food restaurants (name withheld to protect the innocent). I was going through the drive-thru, and noticed that their menu board also advertised the jobs at the restaurant. In fact, the sign said that I could go to their website and apply online! Since I had nothing better to do, I pulled out my iPhone and typed the website into the Safari browser. The web page came up with nothing but the fast food company's logo. I was puzzled by this, so when I got back to the office, I typed the same web address into my desktop computer and I not only got the logo, but I also got a nice map of all of the locations that I could apply to. The reason my iPhone would not show the map was because it was created in Adobe Flash, and the iPhone does not play nicely with Flash.

The moral(s) of the story are as follows:
  1. If you are going to advertise your jobs in a place where people have easier access to a mobile device than a computer, make sure your career site is mobile-enabled.
  2. The experience that you deliver to your mobile job seekers cannot always be the same experience that you deliver on a PC.
