One of the more valuable benefits cited by workers today is having the opportunity for flexible working. It regularly features in surveys as one of the most important perks, often considered more highly than financial reward.

Flexible working, which might cover working remotely or choosing your own working pattern, is deemed precious by employees and employers alike as it brings many benefits. Unlike an interim manager, who has the luxury of short-term assignments and can then take time off before the next role, those on permanent contracts often let work impinge on their home life. Flexible working options, however, can encourage a far better work-life balance, allowing people to work around their caring responsibilities, for example.

Not only that, flexible working can lower stress levels and promote health. It can also allow employees to work when they are at their most productive. Night owls might like to start work at midday and finish in the later evening, while early birds could log on at 6pm. Such a provision also demonstrates that the employer trusts their employees, making everyone feel more respected.

Employers, therefore, will find they have a far happier workforce. People who are given the autonomy to choose their own working pattern will feel more engaged and be more likely to stay. Thus it's a great retention tool. Furthermore, stating 'flexible working' on a job advertisement is as attractive to job hunters as stating 'competitive salary'; it could encourage some real talent through the door.

In addition to a motivated, productive workforce, businesses that use flexible working options will have in place a back-up contingency infrastructure, capable of allowing work to continue in the event of an unforeseen emergency. If employees could not physically reach the office for any reason, they could still work at home or remotely and customers would not realise.

As you can see, there are many benefits to implementing flexible working; isn't it time your business followed suit?
