Is there such a thing as talent in recruitment?

Conor McGregor recently stated "There's no talent here, this is hard work," "This is an obsession. Talent does not exist, we are all equals as human beings. You could be anyone if you put in the time. You will reach the top, and that's that. I am not talented, I am obsessed."

Whilst I love his modesty, I have to disagree slightly - I'm obsessed with the fight game, but have no talent, athletic ability and crucially don't think getting punched in the face on a daily basis sounds all that appetizing...the same goes for boxing or football - so Messi, Ronaldo and Anthony Joshua can rest easy as I doubt I'll be looking at challenging them in their jobs, despite my obsession! ;)

However, I think Conor does have a point and it does make me wonder is there such a thing as genuine, natural born talent in the recruitment/sales industry? I don't want to start a discussion meltdown where people start to knock our industry and the proverbial "recruitment is easy" malarkey begins or "you are a bunch of mercenaries...a monkey could do your job" blah blah blah!!!!

In my time working in the industry I have been lucky to have met with and worked alongside a lot of impressive people - many of whom have achieved massive success in their careers. Has this come down to them being naturally gifted in sales? Not really...I think it has come down to the fact that they have mastered the basics, and stuck to a tried and tested routine that is right for them. They have the passion every day to be relentless, disciplined and obsessed with continual learning and self-development. They are also meticulous, confident and still hungry! Another factor and this one for me is crucial...they have experience. Experience is one of the greatest assets any sales person can have. You have been there, you have learned from past mistakes (hopefully!) and you have the ability to bounce back from disappointments.

So yeah, whilst we may not all eventually become UFC champion or win the Ballon d'or, or even the Heavyweight Championship of the world; if you have the drive and passion in a particular field you can achieve!
