Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone has invested the time into searching through Facebook or MySpace and if there are any "cheats" that would be handy to know?

I laughed when I recently saw it summed up something like this:
LinkedIn: Suit and Tie
Facebook: Khakis and Polo
MySpace: Shorts - shirt is optional

Having said that... A few things that are easy on myspace are searching by title and company name. The beauty of MySpace is that you can search occupation, income, education, interests and work experience. Of course - I'd give much less weight to the income today as I might have a few years ago. I think you'll find so many MySpacers make over $900k as a bellhop that you'll start looking to them for career advice.

You can also check out the groups that MySpace offers much like those in Facebook.

I give no blessing to the following link (if it's still up) - but if memory serves there are a few like www.myspaceprofiles.org/profiles floating around out there.

As for Facebook - it offers the basic Search and Advanced Search - both of which offer up the same soft flexibility that you have in MySpace. The difference here is that it will only search people within your own network with the exception of just throwing you a name and the option to add as a friend or send a message. (Heaven forbid you then run with this name to something like Wink or similar People Finder...)
This is where your participation in groups really comes in handy as it will allow you to quickly expand your network and contacts.

You get what you give in these networks, I think.

It depends on what you are sourcing for.....I have found a few candidates on myspace from joining certain myspace groups that focus in IT (I recruit sys admins, engineers, architects and developers). I send folks that I'm interested in a private message through myspace explaining why I'm reaching out to him/her. The response has been very positive!!

I have actually had more luck with myspace than facebook. Although, I have found posting jobs on facebook to be easier....so it is possible that I do get candidates from there that click on our careers site and apply through there.

Im in Perth - good to see you are getting value from the conference! good starting blocks if you are the beginning of stepping up your use of social networking and professional networking sites and forums. There is loads of info out there from people who have sucessfully trod this path before us. If you search in the archives on the recruiting blogs site, ERE or on jobmachine.com (Blog is awesome and has good tips too), you'll find loads of good pointers to get you started. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but will link you into some of the wider community using these sites as sourcing tools already. I went to Shally's Masterclass after the ATC and found some of his search shortcuts really helpful. Its great to be able to access this after hours also.

Couldnt stay around the extra day, sent one of my team instead, that reminds me, he still hasn't presented on what he learnt there (albeit I haven't presented to the rest of the team yet either)

I does look like I have a bit of research to do, but the results of this forum have been truely great.
