Hi,

My tip would be: if possible, reply with a personal note to people who invite you to connect. It's considered very thoughtful and it led to some valuable contacts in my case (although I do it just because I think it's decent). Come to think of it, personalize your invite also, describing what your expertise is and what you could offer. I tend to remember those invites better then others.

I know it will be difficult and could be time-consuming especially for the real power networkers out there, but you could save a "standard" message, copy/paste it and then tweak it when appropriate. After all, it's a social network, right?
After I started using Twitter this year, I also began paying attention to the LI status. Status updates have enabled me to engage my connections in deeper conversations. People actually read the updates and will respond to you by email. It is a simple easy way to stay connected and deepen your connections. I have also had contacts tell me that through the updates and my blogging they feel like they're staying in touch and feel closer to me. It's a simple, easy tool that takes seconds out of my day.
