I am a new recruiter/research assistant and I am frustrated in getting beyond websites like CareerBuilders to search for resumes. Can anyone suggest a source of basic search strings, or how to create them?

Hi Pat,

This is the best starting place, I think:
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en
It is the "advanced search" dialog on Google and it will help you to construct your first strings in the right format.

Also, read trough the discussions here and on the LinkedIn group http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/1176637
for multiple examples.

Thanks Irina. I will follow your suggestions.

Hi Pat,

Try this for starters: Searching for Candidates on Google: Part 1.

Shoot me an email with your coordinates and I'll send you more.
Pam,

You are welcome. Here are a couple more pointers.
Read through the help section on Google search.
http://www.google.com/support/?ctx=web

More detailed (and more advanced) pages are here:

* Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial by the Teaching Library at the University of California at Berkeley http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/FindInfo.html
* Google Guide http://www.googleguide.com

Also, start searching right away and try to play with the search strings (add keywords, remove keywords) to get the results you want.

To learn how to create search strings, it's best to see real examples of various types, as well as templates. So get Shally's sourcing cheatsheets for the major search engines, blogs, LinkedIn, etc., at www.jobmachine.net/products
Thank you Ami--

The information provided by you in your 'snack' webinars (Brown Bag Recruiting) has been extemely useful. Now it is time to start experimenting on my own! Thanks again.

Thank you Glenn--

Your information has helped a lot. There is so much out there, part of the problem is getting organized! But, I think you have to jump in with both feet and just start learning. Already I am more comfortable than I was a week ago.

Greetings Pat,

I strongly suggest SourceCon 2009 to be held next September 2009; check the web site: www.thesourcingnewsletter.com; others, that are noteworthy: Shally Steckerl, www.JobMachine.net ; Glenn Gutmacher, www.Recruiting-Online.com ; and Moises Lopez, at www.SourcingCorner.com ; and Justin Sivey, at http://search-news-views.blogspot.com/; Danny Cahill, at www.AccordingToDanny.com ; Peter Lefkowitz, at www.ShiftingIntoGear.com are all Sourcing and Recruiting Trainers that I have experienced firsthand and recommend highly.

All the Best!
