We're 15K plus strong now, yet I'd wager the 80-20 rule is in effect: 20% of RBC members are doing 80% of the work (although I suspect the gap is even larger).

I know there are always lurkers in these things - kind of hard to think of a recruiter as a lurker - but rather than just joining groups, how about a post every once in a while? I notice that the leader board is filled with high point people who have less that 10 posts/comments but are signed up for 100+ groups (not you Lonnie - you contribute).

Do we really want people who do not contribute to our community - at least in some tangible way (like the people they invite contributing) - to be members?

Thoughts?

Jerry and Dan-

I called Todd and told him about the Settings...what comes to mind in all of this is that as recruiters we've neglected to apply onboarding principles here @RBC. Let's put together a Welcome Wagon package that all new members receive and maybe, just maybe, this will result in more action...

Yes, I'm volunteering to put the package together. Who wants to join me?
Dan et. al. (includes that furry faced fellow who likes to look stir things up with his honest opinions of trampy ning sites)...

Private message me (using the RBC system) if you want in and include a snapshot of the things you believe new members should know about our community. Jason PMed me and he's in as well.

I think if what you are suggesting is a list of various ways people can interact with the site and be as involved as they want, it's a good idea.

but I don't think setting expectations when people join is a good idea so it really has to be a suggested way for involvement.

Reespect (pronounced Reespect) - off to Jamaica. See you in a week.

JD..."know about our community" as in how the site works - for example, email settings or how to italicize things and include links in posts. Now go away.
Mun... Should have been "Go away mun" :)

HOW TO DO STUFF
HOW TO LINK
If you want to set a link into a post say whatever it is you want to say into the Posting Box. Copy the url of the site you want to link to. Choose a word as your launching site (the word you want to link) and highlight it (left-click over the word to highlight). Now move your cursor to the Toolbar and look for the symbol that looks like a chain link (second from right). Left-click on it. A box will come up (near the top - mine is pale yellow) that says, "This website is using a scripted window to ask you for information. If you trust this website, click here to allow scripted windows..." (Yeah, I know it's a pain in the ass.) Click on it. ANOTHER window comes up with two choices - choose "Temporarily allow scripted windows". Now left-click again on your chosen word to highlight it again. A "Script Prompt" box will come up near the top. Set your (copied) url into that. Click OK. WA-LA! Your link is set.

HOW TO ITALICIZE
Set your cursor over the beginning of the portion you want to italicize. Left click and pull cursor to end of portion you want to italicize. Move your cursor up to the Toolbar and left-click on the symbol that looks like an "I" that is leaning to the right (I) - it is the second one from the left. Left-click on it and WA-LA! Your choice is italicized!

HOW TO BOLD
Set your cursor over the beginning of the portion you want to bold. Left click and pull cursor to end of portion you want to bold. Move your cursor up to the Toolbar and left-click on the symbol that looks like a capital b (B) - it is the first one from the left. Left-click on it and WA-LA! Your choice is bolded!

HOW TO UNDERLINE
Same drill if you want to underline (pick the symbol third from the left that looks like a capital u (U) with a line beneath it.

HOW TO STRIKE THROUGH
Same drill if you want to leave something in your post with a line drawn through it - choose the symbol that looks like a capital s (S) with a line drawn through it.

SETTING A PICTURE IN
And if you want to set a picture in (and who doesn't - this sometimes brings a whole other message and usually much more meaning to a post!) here's how:
Find a picture that is a good representation for what you're saying (I use Google Images). Save it to your pictures file. Now, when you want to set the pic (I usually set it after I write something - sometimes the writing gives me other ideas for pics) set your cursor at the top of the page, before your post writing. Click on the symbol in the Toolbox above the Posting Box that looks like a picture (mine has color in it - green and blue) and is to the far right of the choices. Click on it. A box will come up that says "Add an Image". Click on browse and then find your saved picture in your Pics file. Left double-click on your picture and then click "Add". WA-LA - your pic is added!

I hope this is a useful guide.
