I have a few questions as an individual seeking a career.

How is it that with all the recruiters out there that there are so many of us unemployed?
Do recuiters only go after highly certified, multiple degreed, IT professionals?
Are recuriters only looking for potential candidates that bring in the highest dollar?
Is it customary for potential candidates to get caught up in the in-fighting between recruiters and then be dropped?

I ask these questions because I was laid off on the 15th of February and have still not found a position. I have sent my resume to multiple recruiting firms such as Buchanan & Associates, etc., and I hear nothing.

Has recruiting become just a business where the concern is to try and out-do each other or are there recruiters out there that still truly care about the job-seeker.

I certainly mean no offence but I am at a loss here.

Sincerely,

David

Hi David. First I sympathize with you and understand the hardships and frustration any job search entails. It can be a lonely and hard road.

Recruiting is one of those businesses that is a little bit different based on the eye of the beholder. As a job hunter you probably view recruiters differently than we view ourselves.

Many recruiters are caring, concerned professionals and have your best interest at heart but the difficulty is understanding what we as recruiters do. Our job is to work for our client. They pay our fees and own our first allegiance. The fact that your not getting a response is unfortunate but the majority of recruiting firms are simply overwhelmed with the flood of resumes they receive as well as the very intense nature of our business. Most recruiters are paid to go after, to quote you, "highly certified, multiple degreed, IT professionals" as many companies (our clients) have other means to find the bulk of their employees.

My advice would be to get to know and partner up with a firm focused on IT recruitment, establish a relationship with the recruiters you work with, and at the same time be your own recruiter and pro actively pursue your next job. If I can personally help you or share some ideas please call me and I'll try to help.

Also, I see you have joined our group, which is focused on recruiters and recruitment issues. There are other sites on Ning.com you may find more helpful in your career efforts. You can find them by searching for careers from the ning.com home page.
