Topic: The Sugar Packet Solution: head. " ~Charlie Chaplin Have you ever been in a café or Starbucks and sat at a wobbly table? If another table is not available, what is a solution? I typically reach for one or two sugar packets to put under one of the table legs. It solves the wobble temporarily, but it doesn't take care of the reason behind the wobble. When facing an issue in business or a problem within your office or department, how can you best get to the reason behind the wobble? Asking the right questions is a start but how you handle the answers will lead you to the grand finish. • Communication is an essential key when determining the right course of action. Offering a team or client the opportunity to freely give feedback is imperative for repeat business and/or success. • Listen to the feedback. Seems silly to have to state but it is a must. • Devise and then follow a course of action that addresses the issue and sorts through it is not always easy but with solid communication (including the listening part), it is possible. • Following the follow through comes the follow up. Keep that newly established line of communication open and check in as often as isn't annoying. It is an endless circle/cycle, the feedback loop. But it is critical in smooth operations and when taking a company or department to the next level. So next time you are tempted to just reach for a sugar packet, flip that darn table over and tighten some screws, sand down that rough patch, and make the proper adjustments. Comment on: Topic 'Shouldn't we just get rid of internal recruiters?': "business", the nuances of the specific job, what made someone successful in the past and what made them unsuccessful and coach, guide, train and develop our internal hiring managers about what constitutes great feedback and assessments much better than an agency recruiter could. The other add is this...............if you've been in a niche market/industry for a long time like I have (16+ years, and recruiting for ecommerce since it's inception), you develop long term relationships with the players in the field who literally become invaluable to you as a referral and knowledge base. All in all we know the ins-and-outs of our company needs and that is beyond value added in my opinion. I'm not saying agency recruiters don't add value because they do. I use them on key searches as a partner, but do find myself spending a lot of time on course correction when it comes to caliber and "fit" issues with candidates. This is prevelant even with those agency recruiters I've worked with over a long period of time. Fine tuning is essential to the relationship both inside and outside and agency recruiters tend to move around a lot and whichever agency they happen to be working for tends to also have different business models, so in some cases it's like retraining them again. Lastly, my influence of managing the complete recruiting process for my company, full cycle allows me the insight and the right to stand up for a candidate when my interview team is on the fence. Case in point, a key IT position that was open for a long time ended up with a mish-mash of "yes votes", "on the fence votes" and a couple of "no votes". But when assessing the feedback (I do send out a detailed feedback assessment form to everyone involved in the interview process.........AND......train them on it before hand so we're getting good content versus personal view points), it was light as a feather and had NO weight to it. I challenged my functional V.P. of the department to either cut the candidate loose or take a few more rounds in order to construct a solid yes or no vote. And they did. And they hired the candidate. And it's a very strong hire. I don't think you can influence like this from outside the company. And I believe that is what they call value added. Just my 2 cents worth. Manners are essential for society, but are often misused to be not about respecting mutual rights and obligations, but rather for the reverse: to handle people by class, status, power, or for exploitation. For example, we know that its sometimes rude when poor people do something, but sometimes eccentric when rich people do the same thing. Manners are all about situations; if im bleeding and you are an EMT, I dont much care if you have a pleasing personality or how you feel about dogs, kids, and apple pie. If passion is involved, or politics, or matters of honor, expected and appropriate human responses may be all over the map. Manners are often the very source of conflict. If you are eastern in your outlook (a generalization of course) you dont like to say no to people directly- so you hint, or rephrase, or temporize. Westerners see that as horribly rude and not to the point, so things move backwards when a situation comes up where ''no'' should be the answer, for either side. When companies, countries, and ideas are on the move, people pull together and generally behave well, watching the ball. When things stagnate and ossify, trivial and schoolastic issues dominate time and attention, creating drama when life does not. I know John personally and he has offended me on numerous occasions. Yet I consider him a finely mannered person. A paradox ? Not at all. The point here is that manners are situational and individual.
