If i wanted to counsel people i would turn into a "job search coach, guru, career advisor build a talent community and spend my days engaging with the walking wounded who are fulfilling their unemployment requirements. do i have time for someone who calls me to ask a question or ask me to look at their resume and offer some suggestions. By all means i spend hours a day doing just that. No i do not. Either he has a problem or he doesn't have enough to do. I am not a baby sitter, a counselor nor can i write script for the meds to control obsessive compulsive behavior. If you do fool somebody with your resume, what happens when you walk though the door to meet with an employer who is expecting someone with only 10 years work experience and the person who presents appears to have been personal friends with Lewis and Clark. Do you like being tricked? I don't and most employers feel the same way. You won't get a chance to talk about your value. You will get at most a short, courtesy interview and an irritated employer because you misrepresented yourself and if fact lied by omission. Unless a mature job seeker plans on extensive plastic surgery, finding a good forger to redo diplomas, and have someone perform a partial lobotomy on previous employers, trying to trick someone by sanitizing a resume is just stupid. We all are who and what we are. When I get one of these works of art, my first question is, "is this a full resume of all career experience?". If the answer is no, I won't send out a partial resume. My clients have a right to know who is going to walk through the door not have to deal with a sleazy recruiter trick to get an interview. If you can't place a mature candidate based on their actual work experience and expertise don't exacerbate their concern about their age by telling them to misrepresent themselves. Nobody like to be tricked or feel like they have to trick somebody to get a job and 99 % of the time it won't work anyway. Comment on: Blog Post '“Fake” postings and your job board': Firms that don't use the tactic are just not thinking ahead. The reality is that there are thousands of mom and pop staffing services that bait their hooks (and a few who aren't mom an pop) way too often with plastic in hopes of catching a few A players they can sell. I understand it. I've even been there. but, as a job seeker it is a nightmare. Every highly skilled job seeker has at least 1 legitimate story of being reeled in only to find that the "advertised dream job" was an illusion and the firm had no knowledge or access but would now "shop" the naive job seeker. Worse, the firm was already shopping them...everywhere. Then, to make matters worse, the job seeker learns (through their network) that a firm with a dream job will NOT be considering them for an open position because they were "listed" by a third party and the firm is committed to hiring directly. (Yes, the problem is also the way in which companies screw up their own efforts to find the best and brightest). The entire Industry is tarred by this brush. The problem is we have no useful means to enforce or even "out" the offenders and few of them are interested enough in our business as a profession and industry to read this or any other conversation on the topic. Sorry for the rant. Just talked to a recruiter who didn't get considered because of this and they should have known better. Great post Jeff I encourage the very best candidates to qualify their relationship with 3rd party players in writing to specific openings in specific firms for a specific period of time. Comment on: Blog Post 'Ugly Candidates - what is a client to do?': really doesn't matter what age, but it seems to be a bit more prevalent in middle to older candidates. You only have 10 seconds on first meeting to register an impression, be it good or bad. It takes much longer to change that impression once it is registered. Anyone going for an interview needs to be able to make the best visual impression they can. Being frumpy can give the employer the impression that the person is not able to keep up and perhaps not able to adjust to an ever changing environment. It's one thing to be over weight, which can be a distraction but can be over looked in the interview, but it is quite another issue when it comes to personal hygiene and clothing issues. You don't need plastic surgery to make sure your hair, beard, mustache, eye brows and nose hair (yes I said nose), are all trimmed and neat. I wouldn't hurt for a female candidate to have a good hair trim and color, or at least have hair in an age appropriate style. Please take a look at your eye glasses. If you haven't replaced the frames in the last 15 years, it's time to update your style. Take out peircings and try to cover up tatoos. I'm not asking candidates to go to Brooks Brothers or Nordstroms to buy an interview outfit, but please make sure your clothes are clean, pressed and fit you properly. Please don't wear athletic shoes to an interview even if it hurts you to wear a dress shoe. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you all get the picture.
