Comment on: Blog Post 'The Intersection of Brand With Talent Migration': r point about HR leaders. Yes. Yes. Yes! The impact of HR not transforming itself into a strategic talent function - as opposed to a reactionary, "let's make sure that we get a good handbook out bout our social media policy" one - will have much deeper implications than a lot of people are thinking about yet. The Boomers are exiting - which means less than half the population will be providing our goods & services (ie, food, defense, clean water, to name some of the important ones). We can't compete that way - hell, we'll shrink. US corporations need to create strategic functions around staffing - either how to be perceived as a "Google" place to work, and/ or how to become incredibly flexible/ resources smart. This is going to take promoting the best of class currently in the profession into roles where they can have impact, as well as "sexying" up the profession to attract the best and brightest from other departments and leanings. I'm working on another post this morning: spent the weekend reading the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2018 Projections, and man is that fertile ground for a recruiting geek like me. I know More people who have not ever gotten a job from a job board, than had.. in fact, I can think of every recruiter who utilizes the job boards or have candidates in their database.. think about it. Gotta tell you but using your sample to generalize to the entire population is bad statistics. "...but I do have my own website where candidates apply directly, and i sure wish that I placed the majority of those who contacted me.. don't you?" This tends to keep more experienced job seekers unemployed for longer periods of time. After about six months they are considered "stale" and no longer qualified because they have been away from their profession too long. Many times policies about not hiring over qualified individuals is actually policy (even if it is not written down). A few studies have been done and they seem to show that experienced employees are not so much a liability as management folklore claims, but that they must be managed in a more participative manner-- oddly, older employees seem to think they are deserving of some respect for their accumulated experience! I think many times managers (and even some HR people) are not aware of the psychological defects and biases that drive their decisions, especially when those decisions cannot be based wholly on objective criteria; matching an applicant to a non-trivial job is the HR equivalent of an NP-Complete math problem-- Some choices are demonstrably bad but there is no way to prove which is best.…; Added by Paul Hanchett at 10:42am on July 29, 2010
