There are some very important things that every new recruiter needs to learn, like the Boolean operators, how to format a resume and documentation in the database. Looking back on my experience as a new recruiter and from the many recruiters I have trained over the years, there is more to it than just knowing how to find someone and submit them. I’ve come up with 8 tips that I believe are just as important for new recruiters, and may even be good refreshers for some of the more seasoned ones!
Recruiting is an extremely rewarding and challenging career. And as a new recruiter, it can be overwhelming. If you keep these tips in mind, hopefully they will help you to stand out from the rest and be more of a partner to your candidates and clients alike.
Agree with Bruce. A good mentor at an early stage of your career can decide your fate as a recruiter.
Good post Becky, enjoyed your tips for new recruiters.
This is a great blog. One of the best ones I have ever read. It hits everything right on the head. I love #3- I think people and companies forget that all too often. In order to be a great recruiter though, you have to be a chameleon with who you recruit.
I have only just joined the recruitment industry about 2/3 months ago and have not had a real mentor. I feel i have picked up the pace with my cold calling etc and seem to sometimes successfully generate a resume, but am i doomed for?
Thanks for all of the positive comments! I'm hopeful that this post has and can continue to help some new recruiters out there.
Martin, you are by no means doomed. You don't have to wait to be assigned a mentor, just reach out to some of the more senior recruiters in your company. You could also blog on here about the things that come up and happen throughout the day. There are a lot of very successful recruiters on this site and they can help too.
Thanks Will! It's always been my belief that you don't have to be an expert at anything to recruit on it. But you are recruiting the experts, so ask them to explain it and you'll learn more than you would've by doing a Google or Wikipedia search. Then the next time you work on the same skill set, you'll feel more confident.
Great post, Becky! This is such useful advice for newbies and a good refresher for some of the old timers too, who can sometimes forget what the newbies are coming in with...curiosity and energy. It's good to be confident, but it helps to always be a little afraid, so you know you are pushing yourself.
Thanks for the confidence boost, appreciated it Becky! and of course will be using this website for any issues.
