In order to be a successful Recruiter, what are the largest motivating factors? Compensation or Opportunity?

Before I continue, I want to clarify that opportunity to make more money is not what I mean as its definition. Opportunity to grow in skill and responsibility is my definition for this blog.

Statistics show that a successful recruiter is mainly driven by compensation as opposed to opportunity. Although both characteristics help a recruiter into success, commission is the largest compenent to one’s success in the industry.

As the Recruitment Life Cycle from an Agency model shows:

Business Development – RFP, Vendor Proposals, Sales…etc.

-------------

Receive new position order from Client

Place Calls – Hiring Manager

- Candidates -> Coach candidates during application, interview, and offer stages.

Close Order

----

Invoice Client

Task based positions where opportunity to grow in task is very different than recruiting. Recruiting as a skill takes time to learn which may be challenging in skill, however the core steps, conversations, and skills/traits that are sought after remain consistent, and unlikely to change.

However when recruiting after a number of years, a DECISION must be made: Compensation or Opportunity?

Compensation is the key indicator for success in recruitment as the motivation is to close business and that’s it.

Therefore if hiring recruiters that answer money as their key motivator without caring about growing up the corporate ladder, you’re hired!
