Could You Be Great As an HVAC Technician? Exploring HVAC Careers

Different people are born to do different things. Some have an aptitude for selling, some for communication, and yet others for administering medication. Then there are some, who are born curious. Curious about how things work. Those children you see who aren’t just satisfied with owning and playing with a remote controlled car – they open it up, take it apart, and try to put it back together. It’s those kids that grow up to be more technologically inclined than the rest. A lot of people take today’s technology for granted. These guys though, want to explore its deepest mysteries.

Today technology has progressed through leaps and bounds. Even though there are more and more machines that make human life simpler, the running of those very machines has gotten incredibly complicated. The need of the hour then, is of highly skilled individuals who can understand this technology and troubleshoot problems when moments of difficulties arise.

If you are one of the curious ones, and don’t just take today’s technology at face value, but like to dig a little deeper instead, then maybe you should consider a career in the Heating, Ventilation, and air conditioning industry. Why HVAC? Read on and find out.

Why a career in HVAC might be the right choice for you

  • What is HVAC?HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and air conditioning. This covers everything from central heating to refrigerators, air-conditioning, and anything else that has to do with air flow and controlled temperatures in an inhabited environment.
  • Doing what you love.If you are one of the curious people that were alluded to earlier, then a job in HVAC would be perfect for you. For one thing you’ll be paid to take things apart, figure out what’s wrong, fix it, and put it back together. Not only are you satiating your technological curiosity, but you’re also providing a valuable service that will enrich people’s lives.
  • Expertise required. With the evolution of technology, it isn’t enough to just be curious though. A lot of hard work and training goes into becoming an air conditioning and refrigeration technology professional. This kind of qualified expertise in what’s needed in the market too. Gone are the days of a one size fits all approach to technological support, today specialized training is an absolute must, and there is a distinct lack of such individuals in the professional space.
  • The way forward. This doesn’t mean that a master’s degree in mechanical engineering is required though. There are specific air conditioning and refrigeration technology institutes that provide certificate courses that span over as little as 12 months. Although proceed with caution, because not all of these programs are recognized in the industry. It is better to go with an institution that has a good standing, such as YTI Career Institute and its Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Program.
  • Avenues for work.Because of the widespread use of air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation based technologies, the work opportunities are massive. The manufacturers that make these electronics are always looking for able technicians to add to their customer care force. Apart from that, institutions like schools, offices, universities and other organizations also tend to hire technicians to look after their HVAC needs. Independent contractors are another strong source of employment, and lastly, a lot of technicians have even gone the freelance or self-proprietary path and made a strong source of income out of it.

This doesn't violate any of our rules, but I'm not sure how many recruiting and HR pros (which is this site's audience) give a crap about careers in HVAC unless they have the misfortune to get stuck hiring for them.
