Staffing and the Jerry Maguire syndrome!!
“Help me to help you!” We have all heard it, that very very famous and perhaps even over used quote from the movie Jerry Maguire. But when it comes to the staffing world it should be one of the most important quotes we ever hear.
Too many times there is a less than great relationship between staffing and the hiring manager (HM). Too many times, there is not enough communication and interaction between staffing and the HM. Most of this is a buy product of the HM having had some bad experiences with staffing. I mean let’s get real there are allot of bad staffing people out there.
It is our jobs to help make the HM understand we are there to help them and to do that we need them to “help us, to help them”. We need to make them understand (taken from a previous blog post and Disney’s “High School Musical”), “we are all in this together”. The term “hiring team” (HT) includes staffing, the HM, and anyone involved in the finding and hiring of a new employee and it is our jobs as staffing professionals to ensure the creation of this HT and ensure it is understood we are all in this together, and that everyone needs to help everyone to make a great hire. This will always start and stop with the HM. Get them to join the HT and everyone and everything else will fall into place. Remind them that like Jerry Maguire says you need them to “help you, to help them”.
I agree, Dean.
"Help me... help you. Help me, help you." Jerry Maguire (1996) is one of the most important statements that can be made in our world of recruitment and recruitment challenges. You highlight the hiring side of the equation, which drives the process. I would add the candidate side of the equation, and our role as external recruiters to help them help themselves, as well.
Our duel role in helping our clients and our candidates come together continues to be our essential value going forward.
Very good comment and I totaly agree. It was actually gogin to be a follow on posting but you kind of beat me to ti :)
This is great, in fact, I hear my boss use this weekly!
Good stuff.... Does anyone like the "Show Me The Money" line/scene?
Hmmmmm....I'm on the fence with this one Dean. "Help me, help me and you and the candidate" might be more realistic quote although I wouldn't advise to put it quite that way to a HM.
I think it's a matter of credibility and all HM's know you're trying to make a sale. Taking a more consultative approach and realizing that everyone in the process wins with a successful placement certainly wins points...I've seen it first hand.
My favorite line from that movie was " Don't shoplift the pootie" Not sure how it applies but I'm also not sure how the other lines apply either. Cheers.
I think that is the point, we need to make them understand yes we want to make a sale, but we want to make the right sale, and to do that we need ther help.
