Why do employees change jobs? The most popular reason thought of is due to insecurity and instability in one’s position.

Although, how many people today can say they respect their management?

Statistics show that the number one reason why people change positions is due to their management team. Lack of motivation, satisfaction, and appreciation in one’s job are the reasons why we look elsewhere. The notion of reaching the glass ceiling, where one cannot rise above their current role, getting all that they can from their organization is due to the influences of their superior. Although the glass ceiling is highly dependant on the relationships we have with our superiors, not only dependant on the organizational structure.

As a result, companies spend thousands of dollars on retention programs, termination costs, training, and recruiting costs. On average to hire a full time employee can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks. If an employee provides 2 weeks’ notice, there is potential for a 4 week gap to occur for work to pile up, or burden other employees.

How do we keep staff motivated?

Mentorship programs, 360 degree feedback, and secession planning to name a few.

These programs which may become costly can save companies large operational costs from termination and recruiting costs in the long run.

If we see high turnover, the answer may be closer than we think.
