I like you, you retweet me, we tell our network about what we’re doing this weekend.  Whether your personal life is scattered over Facebook dashboards or you diligently share relevant articles with your LinkedIn network, social media is an important pillar in today’s communications.  It’s no surprise that it plays an important role in recruiting as well.

Looking for the talent you need will rarely be as simple as waiting for the right applicant to walk through the door, and hiring managers need to proactively broadcast open opportunities to job search engines, communicate with current employees to encourage referrals, and take advantage of the company’s social platforms.

Nearly 80% of job seekers use social media in their job search, a number that increases for younger job seekers who are in the first decade of their careers.  Despite this, 2 in 3 employees say their employers does not use social media to promote job openings.  If employers don’t catch up, they risk missing more and more qualified and interested job seekers.

What Can You Do?

Stay Active Online – Your social networks are part of your employment and company brand; what do your social pages say about you? Posting consistently, sharing relevant information, and engaging with your client base will help you build a positive online presence.

Share Open Positions - People following you on social media are already interested in your company and are prime targets for potential employees.  Create a process to regularly communicate job openings to your social network. Many Applicant Tracking Systems allow you to share new jobs directly from their system.

Track Results – Use a unique posting url for each job so you can track clicks, applicants, & hires.  As you learn where your applicants are coming from, you’ll be able to create more targeted strategies and posts to attract qualified applicants through social media.

Social media may be for selfies and vacation photos, but it can also be a keeper of your employment brand.  It’s time to take advantage of all the tools available to your to attract top talent and build great teams.
