Pokemon GO, the return of in person sourcing.

So back in the dark ages of sourcing, before social media, before job boards, before wide use of the internet, one of the ways you would source would be to try to find out were the people from a company would congregate after work. You would go there and try to connect with them, figure out what they do and see how they fit what you need. This was called Live or in person sourcing. Once Job boards became big, the internet, social media, this went away. The closest thing to it now is meetups, networking events, conferences, job fairs etc. Well like I said closest thing, as even those are not the same, in that everyone knows why you there and it’s the same reason everyone else is there.

However with the advent of Pokemon Go, in person sourcing has returned. Now you thinking huh. Let me explain, with Pokemon Go you must go out into the world to find Pokemon, to engage in battels etc. Now let’s say you work at Amazon and you play Pokemon GO, What do you think I am going to be doing at lunch, first thing in the morning, right after work? I am ging to be checking around my work building for Pokemon. There is lies the sourcing part. A good sourcer needing say Java developers, will know Amazon has a lot of them. If they find out what buildings they are in, they can then go there under the pretense of playing Pokemon GO knowing there is a good possibility they will run into an Amazon person and the odds are pretty good they will be a java person. If not no worries, as the odds are they know others who are playing and who might be Java people. All you need to do is play the game, and start conversations. In other words in person sourcing.
