Today we are discussing #11 - Political Awareness & Diplomacy.

You must be thinking “what does politics have to do with my job?” but there is a growing acceptance that effective political leadership can make you deliver “best results” in the corporate world. If you really want to achieve success then you cannot ignore the political awareness and diplomatic aspects of your business.

Just to clarify, we are not talking about the Australian Labor Party, rather Political awareness is an awareness of sensitivities, agendas and other external factors that enable you to operate effectively in a work environment. Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of groups or states.

Diplomacy is a critical aspect for the credibility of any business and we at SMStheJOB understand that when working with client or candidate there is always a polictical and diplomatic way of handling matters.

After the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), demand for the professionals who are responsive and effectively communicate with different groups, organisations, delegates and stakeholders has increased significantly.

For better job opportunities, you should be more focused on developing strategic communications for international media; maintaining brand reputation; developing crisis management strategies; developing corporate advocacy; using community relations to counter negative sentiments; dealing with foreign bureaucracy, activists and opinion leaders. Understanding the impact of political awareness is a must whilst designing business strategies.

In the Harvard Business Review, The Rise of Corporate Diplomacy (Finally!) blog post explains the role of senior executives and importance of diplomacy in advancing any corporatations goals.
