Jessica - 4 years ago the firm that I was with asked me to start an intern program. This consisted of local college students over the summer. They basically split time doing both research and lead generation. It helped with the overall effort of 'flipping stones', but in the grand scheme it did not produce much. Having said that- the biggest positive was the overall experience these students got participating in the intern program. It was for all but one, the first time working in any sort of office environment. None of these individuals had goals of being a recruiter per se, but I always shared with them the overall value in the skill sets and how they would be applicable down the road to whatever their chosen paths might be. This was message was embraced and over the weeks this group bonded and really gained invaluable experience in working as a team. It was a tremendous experience for myself as well, as I still retain relationships with several of these former interns. So to answer your question directly- perhaps not a huge part of our recruiting efforts, but a program that benefited all involved in other positive ways.
Tim - thanks for sharing.  We had a similar experience w/ our intern this summer.  While it isn't necessarily his intent to work in the recruiting space, he did get involved with several different departments, and I think he left with a better idea of what he wants to do when he graduates next summer - so hopefully a win for him.  For me, the experience was a win as well, especially on the blogging front - he had some great insights as a gen-Yer that generated buzz in the blogosphere, which was awesome.
