It is a challenging thing planning a career in the Recruiting world, the starting point seems fairly straight forward...... Most people fall into it don't they? I don't know many (or any) who can answer the question "How did you get into Recruiting?" with a, "You know, it's just something I always wanted to do!" Most I think fall into it... some fall in love with it, some use it as a stepping stone, some "gun" sales guys, see the money making opportunity and want to jump on the bandwagon.

It's the next steps which is always a bit blurry, what does one aim for? Being the top biller? Being the best you can be? Running your own business into a multi-million chart busting empire? Being the Recruitment MASTER within your company, with a place on the Board, Executive team? WHATEVER....... All admirable of course, and everyone has their own path..

How about the respect of your peers? If you are not in an agency, where you are surrounded by other potentially like minded Recruiters, how does one get that? How does one get known as an expert in their field, when just working their tail off 80-100 hours a week? Present at seminars, or expo's etc, blog, generally involve yourself in the outer Recruiter community...How to find the time??

Attending the Australasian Talent Conference in April of this year, I had one of the more eye opening experiences of my life. Meeting and listening to people like Dave Mendoza, Kevin Wheeler, Shally Steckerl, Carol Mahoney et al, was amazing. It left me thinking though, after the games of wii Baseball (Thanks HRX) and Networking drinks, HOW DOES SOMEONE GET THAT GIG? How does one get themselves know in those circles and invited to do such presentations?

I now have my GOAL... 5 years to do it... Just need to find the next starting point, I'm not just falling into this.

Sometime you get into it by doing it. Most people started out working for an agency to learn the trade or learn that the trade is not for them.......but most important, you do have a goal!
