Dear friends,

I am so excited to tell you about a few split placements that were generated directly from 2 members here......Me and another person (I should check w/this person before I start broadcasting the fact that this person is getting ahead in this economy......you know how it can be...though I'm sure they won't mind.....)

I am a very "superstitious" when it comes to tooting my own horn - so please bear with me until I am 100% convinced nothing is going to go wrong.......if you don't know what I mean.....well, then.....uh.....you'll find out someday.

So with the earlier thread by Dan wondering where everyone is, etc. let me just say this: I am meeting people here and then building on those relationships to reach my ultimate goal: Sending an invoice.

Once the smoke clears and the money is in the bank we'll post our story. It's a good one!

(I hope I haven't just jinxed these two placements into oblivion.........it can happen!)

That's great news Jerry. Thanks for posting this.
Awesome Jerry,

can't wait to read more. Ideas from this forum have kept me nice and busy, my desk is messier than ever which is always a good sign for me in regards to activity
My theory.. if I have time to tidy my desk I must not be that productive!

i actually bombed an interview once years ago, when the interviewer told me that this compay operated with a clean desk policy.. and could I operate in such an environment. I honestly said "no, I don't think I can" :) end of interview
Jerry,

Congratulations. I would be interested in learning more about how you cultivated the relationship with this other recruiter. I tried to do a split once since I've been out on my own and it never worked out because the other recruiter went behind my back and placed a candidate that I had referred to him. The other recruiter was someone I trusted since we had worked together at one of the large franchise offices. I've been turned off by that experience and am just wondering how you vetted the other recruiter. Thanks.
Hi Chris. That is an excellent question. How do we decide which relationships to build and which are the dead ends?

For me it doesn't take long to get a sense for who the other person is. It's usually apparant rather quickly if the possible split parter is on the up and up. I ALWAYS trust my instinct.

This particular situation started with a member reaching out to me as they had an IT opportunity with their client base. She works in other fields but wanted to take advantage of the opportunity - something we're all doing out here lately!

We had seen each other around RBC so it felt comfortable right off the bat. Once she was able to move our first candidate or two forward - all the while being very sharing with all the feedback - I realized it was a great opportunity to build a relationship and make some money!

So there you have it.

Just trust your instinct. That's what I do!

Trusting your instinct. Interesting subject. How does one learn to do that?
nice question Maureen.

I've been developing my "gut" for years.. it has grown considerably :) One way to learn is to not listen to it, and then you get it wrong and your instinct shouts at you "told you so"

Trusting your instinct is easy... to start off with.. it is the ability to continually trust it when it has been a little off that is the challenge. It is easy to get gun shy after you are wrong
Chris, I hear ya'. I wrote about this splits subject a while back and the experience that queered me on the deals...I am sure, looking back, I was too busy to think much about my "feelings" at the time but I do remember feeling like I was taking a risk at the beginning of the program... a reminder:
I’m not saying sourcers should not do business with those who approach with split deals. I'm just telling my own sorry tale of judgment.
Maureen,

I think you just need to trust your gut, until you have a reason not to. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, assuming they are trustworthy and so far they have been. But, there have been a few people who have approached me for splits and I've been hesitant, something felt off, and if I get that sense, I'm just not going to go there.

Thanks, it is reassuring to hear other success stories. I don't get to this site as often as I would like, but I would be interested in cultivating some contacts that I fee comfortable either referring candidates to, or sharing job openings. I work mostly in manufacturing and engineering in the packaging and food industries. I'm not really sure where to begin, but if anyone is interested, please let me know. Again, congratulations Jerry.
Jerry,

Congrats, that's great news. It also brings up two things that have been on my mind lately that I think are important. Regarding Splits. As some of you have alluded to here, it is best to develop relationships you are comfortable with and that fit well with your business. Sometimes people look at splits as a way to see a job, submit a candidate and poof, there's a placemnt. Could happen, but not very often and not very efficiently. When talking about splits it would be much better if the focus is on connecting people who's businesses may be a good fit rather than specific job and specific candidate.

The other thought is, a couple of us twittered about success stories and maybe starting a #BellRing for placements or other success to share good news and provide a kind of positive online environment. Maybe a permanent Bell Ring group here would be good. We all know how positive the effects of various success stories can be. Food for thought.

Bell Ringing is great! We had a literal bell in the first office I ever recruited from and I remember the first time I got to ring it. I couldn't stop smiling! Then I wanted to be able to ring it again and again so I got right back to my desk and worked my butt off! Congrats, Jerry!

Slouch, can we put up a virtual bell that alerts everyone when it's rung and you can see who rang it? That would be fun ;)
