Topic: Wrap-Around Porch: small business owners are more receptive if you call it new media instead of social media. Does that change what it is or the focus? While I personally understand the need to sound business-like and not appear to be indulging in something that is merely fun or, God forbid, social, I can also appreciate what "social media" represents - not just constantly selling, sharing knowledge about oneself or one's business, targeted marketing - the whole "getting to know you" scenario. The Business Coach, himself, seemed to have difficulty grasping and wrapping his head around the whole concept of using new media to increase your online presence. The question of “Why?” kept cropping up. While I, personally, have been extremely involved with social media for the last several years, others have not… And in actuality, something like 70% of those currently involved with social media have only been actively participating for six months or less. Most are novices and struggle considerably with simply “creating a profile.” “Login every day, ‘cause it’s not going away.” This is my credo and what I announce at every luncheon and workshop. I suppose you can choose to ignore what new media represents - another way to market or advertise your business, a way to change a cold call to a warm call, but it is a known fact that people prefer to do business with people they know. Why wouldn’t you want to meet and greet with current and potential clients? They can be your best references and advertisers. The “New Front Porch” is getting bigger and better all the time. AND you can pick which part of the porch you enjoy the most, where the view is the best, where to best chat with the neighbors, where the breeze is the best, and whether or not you want to catch the mail right when it is delivered. I want to be everywhere on the porch. I don’t want to miss a thing. If you aren’t promoting to current and potential clients/customers through the use of social media, someone else is or will be shortly. The commitment is minimal, a little work at first. But maintenance is easy and a little less stressful than constantly checking your actual mailbox to see if a check has arrived. Topic: Client Control: Managing Expectations: n is key to accomplishment and must be thought of first and foremost in order for success to be achieved. The Hiring Manager is the gateway to bringing a search or recruitment to an appreciated close. How can you, as a Recruiter or HR Professional, keep dissatisfaction at bay? Learning to speak with assurance and limiting failure. Gene Kranz of NASA, during the famed Apollo 13 mission, said, "Failure is not an option." How did he put those words into action? He reached out to his team for help in bringing the mission to a triumphant conclusion. The definition of success in this particular instance was altered considerably from what its primary focus had been. Doing what needs to be done and learning to be flexible in this time of economic turn down is an insightful endeavor and will lead to greater outcomes. Knowing when to ask for help is probably one of the most difficult abilities to master. It is driven into our business make up to be self-reliant and just get the job done. It is never easy to say, "I need help." Think about it, when was the last time you said that in a business setting? For most, it is far easier to say "Can I help you?" We live and work in a society where we are led to believe we can have it all, but in order to have it all, you must be able to do it all. Not an easy task when time is divided between work, family, work, friends, more work, church, activism, volunteering, promoting, blogging, commuting, conferences, errands and still more work... the list is endless. Diversification may be key in muddling through this trying time. Expanding your scope of business offerings and paying closer attention to a client's needs is a step toward success. Keeping the communication door open will manage expectations and align procedures with what is anticipated. Expectations lead to the unfortunate risk of being let down. However, lowering expectations or having them lowered for us is not the right answer. The best way to manage those expectations is to be prepared and stay in constant contact with the parties involved in any given recruitment or business transaction. By asking for help from Hiring Managers, they are kept in the conversation loop and part of the active process. Put on your armor, sharpen your sword, and be ready to conquer a deadline or delinquent feedback. Unfortunately, failure is bound to occur but if you do not risk failure, you most certainly risk growth. Learn from failure and know that even the greatest leaders have suffered at the hands of risk, yet even more have benefited. Topic: Adjust Your Rearview Mirror: rrence and more adeptly create a "lesson-learned" effect. Framing every experience might keep them fresher and more vivid, easier to remember, from which to learn. Today, while driving on a lovely California freeway, I faced morning traffic that was not my friend. Ten lanes across and still the 91 Freeway looked more like a parking lot than an incredibly well-traveled major artery of North Orange and Riverside Counties in Southern California. Every so often, traffic would flow more evenly and at one point, it opened up wide in the Eastbound lanes I was traveling. Before me lay an uprising in the road that would ease into a clear straightaway soon enough. If I looked far enough ahead I could see traffic lightened up considerably. In my rearview mirror, I could see the miles of congestion I had just made my way through. Whenever traffic picks up like this, it is a joy for seasoned California drivers; breaks like this do not occur often enough and they tend to incite greater speeds. Looking ahead of me as the road began to flatten out, I could see a pick-up truck in the center lane, stopped, with hazards flashing. I slowed & moved out of my lane, giving plenty of clearance to avoid the stalled vehicle. As I approached and passed the truck, I eased back into my lane and looked in the rearview mirror to see if anyone was in the truck, as this was a very dangerous place to stop. I could just makeout a person in the passenger seat and wondered how they would ever leave the vehicle without getting hit by the oncoming traffic moving at 60 - 75 miles per hour. I checked my rearview mirror once more and to my horror, witnessed several cars swerve and another run right into the backend of the truck. And then another one and another. It was a classic pile up that I had just dodged. I shuttered and drew a breath of relief that I had not been texting or digging through my bag for this or that. The rearview mirror showed me what might have been. Lessons come in all forms, this one teaches caution and awareness of one's surroundings - always be attentive to what is going on around you. Looking back at what you missed, what you didn't say, what you should have said or done, the mess you made or avoided becomes a first-hand education. Learn from it.
