Exploited vulnerabilities can easily result in corrupted data, system hijackings, and the loss of consumer confidence. For those looking to safely harness the power of cloud technology, here’s how to protect your data by increasing cloud security. A Public vs. Private Cloud Deciding between a public or private cloud is a starting point for security strategy, and many struggle with this choice. A public cloud is often cheaper, as your data shares space with other organizations. It’s also quicker to implement, but has vulnerabilities inherent in multiple companies connecting to the same space. If one of these organizations suffers a breach, your data is at risk. On the other hand, a private cloud is tailored to your business and only your business. There is no shared space, and nobody else is connecting to the realm where your data is held. Due to this level of customization and increased security, a private cloud is more expensive to implement. There is no hard and fast rule, but smaller organizations generally gravitate to a public cloud as it grants them robust capabilities at a lower cost. Local Backups are Necessary Regardless of the cloud chosen, there is still room for increasing cloud security. A tech mantra that holds true now more than ever, it’s vital to backup often. The cloud is a wonderful capability-expanding innovation, but it cannot be relied upon 100%. If all your data housed in a cloud suddenly becomes corrupted, your organization must have a way to carry on basic operations. The truth is most organizations do not have the server space or resources necessary to back up every single piece of data on their own. In such a case, backup the most critical business data, as much as possible, on private business servers. From there, understand what backup capabilities your cloud service provider employs. Some may be automatically backing up all uploads, and some may not. Likewise, simply pouring every piece of data into a cloud with its own backup is not necessarily the best strategy. Certain sensitive pieces of information are best left completely out of the reach of any cloud. Thoughtfully choosing what type of data should enter a cloud environment is a necessary part of any strong cloud security plan. Defense Through Data Encryption One of the most common strategies to protect your data in the cloud is through encrypting it. Some cloud services offer their own levels of encryption, wherein they password protect or scramble your data prior to placing it in their environment. Then, when you want to access your data, it is quickly decoded into its normal discernable format. Regardless of whether your cloud service encrypts data or not, you can still personally encrypt the data prior to another organization even touching it to achieve a second layer of security. A new “Rowhammer” cloud attack method has been able to beat many encryption programs by stealing the keys. While double encryption may slow things down, it will still be worth the extra security to combat such attacks. IoT Technology Vulnerabilities Your data in the cloud can be accessed through any internet connection, and it’s easy to forget about many “smart” tech devices in a business. The Internet of Things revolution has brought us smart phones, smart TVs, and even smart light bulbs, but each of these items can bring a vulnerability to your cloud. Consider every device at your business that has internet capabilities, and turn off that function if it is not truly necessary. Considering that Target’s massive 2013 breach was orchestrated through an internet-enabled air conditioning system, IoT is not something to ignore. Don’t Overlook the Little Things With so many high-level measures for increasing cloud security, it’s important not to overlook the more common actions that can keep your environment safe. Requiring employees to use intricate passwords and change them regularly is a basic strategy, and yet 90% of passwords can be cracked within an hour. Even more surprising, over 10,500 organizations neglected to even bother with a password for their database software, and succumbed to a recent widespread security breach. In addition to passwords, educate employees on how to notice suspicious activity or spot questionable links. Update software often, as updates contain security patches for vulnerabilities. Implement proven antivirus software that doesn’t just catch a breach after the fact, but is proactive and alerts you to any attempts being made against your cloud. Lastly, read the small print in agreements with your cloud service provider to understand what rights they are claiming to your data. Increasing Cloud Security The average company has over 23 cloud-related security incidents each month. When it only takes one to cause devastation, it’s clear that cloud security must be a priority and a concrete plan is necessary. Ken, I'm going to dodge your question since I am a niche recruiter using techniques dating back to the invention of the wheel and fire.... I recruit the old-fashioned way- I do confirm what my recruiting brings forth using LI [why not, its there, use it]....I also use LI to check backgrounds of people I detect so I can confirm data about someone I targeted and want to call to be sure that person I have in my sights has the 'right' background. [Oh, and before I forget, I forgot to mention yesterday that I must be recruiting X's, Y's and Millenials since my Allied Health people are about that age.....but I don't get much 'tude from them and calling them at work has not been any more of a problem than it has ever been. So maybe I'm lucky in that regard.] I don't hang banners, I don't advertise except for Retained Searches and I don't do much scraping at Indeed. So it could be said I am not 'qualified' to comment on the current tools and technologies since, simply, I don't much use them. Since what I do works for me- so called 'direct recruiting' is what it seems to be called nowadays....along the lines of what Maureen does...then I have not needed to make any procedural changes. I take advantage of what LI/ZI has to offer but I don't live by it. What LI and ZI provides is not -as much as it might surprise one to hear this- all-inclusive. What I do can be done from a corner telephone booth, using pen, paper and a roll of dimes. And I get everyone possible doing this while there are 'holes' in what LI/ZI offer. Now, to answer your question: Were I training newbies and/or starting a new search firm, I would insist that everyone on staff learn all the tricks of the trade of employing Social Media websites, Boolean Strings, use everything LI, AIRS, ZI has to offer, etc., etc. In other words, I would insist everyone on staff learn to use the tools you guys use. You can't have too many bullets on your belt. Watching out for myself I can do as I have been doing....almost deliberately insulating myself from certain tools you guys use since, simply said, I can. But were I starting a new firm with staff, well, that's different. Try telling X's, Y's and Millenials they can't use Social Media and I'd be swinging from a rope. I would, of course, insist also that everyone on staff learn direct recruiting so they are never 'stuck' if their computers decide to run away and join the circus. In other words, they all need to learn how to recruit using only the telephone. You have to learn to walk before you learn to run. Besides, as I said above, using Social Media, etc. does not guarantee a 100% catch every time you drop your net. I've seen Retained search firms using Social Media and mass communications that never bothered to call local and see what might be right under their noses. And each month goes by while they collect their retainer while not referring candidates simply because no one [qualified] had responded to their 'tools and techniques'. That is not 'recruiting'. As for markets, that is a tough one to identify; especially since markets are constantly changing. What is hot today is not necessarily hot tomorrow. Nursing and Physician recruitment still works and will continue to do so for a while; IT, in all its different manifestations continues to work, also. Especially as how that pertains to Start-Ups. BioPharm/BioMed will always require engineers and appropriately talented executives. This will not change for a long while. I would also suggest specializing in Executive recruitment since that puts one in the eye of the storm. A recruiter who knows the politics, workings and drama of executive changes is in an advantageous [business] position... In other words, I'd suggest the same markets K/F, Heidrick & Struggles, Spencer Stuart, et al work. With this in mind, I would also recommend someone on staff align themselves with VC's so they can be strategic partners and know when and what kind of 'specialists' will be needed for Start-Ups and can provide them as necessary. I would also recommend someone work Financial markets. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to suggest this. In a recruitment firm, you want some plodders working the middle markets and you also want stars working the high-profile high-value Executive and Technical markets. Again, none of this takes a rocket scientist to calculate where the money is. Where do I put less emphasis? Marketing and Sales executives. Anyone on staff who seems to have a proclivity for this arena would be encouraged but for me it is not a favorite area. Government recruiting via the BAH's, CSC's, et al would be considered but only if we had someone on staff who had lived that world and had one of those little black books full of strategic contacts. Since government spending is capricious in nature, I would be suspicious of this niche, especially since so much collusion and under-the-table 'wink-wink, nod, nod' deals are an integral part of this kind of market. As much as the money is good, it is a crooked market. I don't think I've said anything unique here. The real issue -as a subset to your question, Ken- is to work in a manner/operate a search business that is insulated from systems that disrupt/radically affect how recruitment fees are charged. Whether this refers to KTR's who cheat the system by offering cheap-sh*t fees so as to overcome 'new to the business' barriers or organizations such as LI, AIRS and ZI that provide easy pickings to the point where clients take it into their heads they can reduce their payouts to headhunters are key issues that need the most consideration. There will continue to be a concerted effort by the F1000 to configure and equip their recruitment departments so they can operate separately from the TPR. Controlling the ability to continue to recruit using the traditional [33.3%] formula is one of the most compelling issues related to Executive Search. There will always be discernible markets to work, entrepreneurs will always find and exploit them. Russia has declining cash reserves and its economy is heavily reliant on its trade in gas, yet the risk of shortages because of Mr Putin’s geopolitical games is something we can all do without. Other countries manage to insure themselves against external shocks to their energy needs; while the UK’s market- driven approach has proven entirely inadequate. The New Labour Government has taken a decade to recognise the need to increase storage capacity – France can store 122 days of gas, Germany 99 and the UK only 15 days. Westminster and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should work with the Irish Government to make these islands entirely self-sufficient, via renewable non-market- driven energy resources. JONATHAN T CLARK Plaid Cymru, Monmouth Constituency, Westminster Parliamentary Candidate Nuclear puzzle SIR – On the issue of nuclear waste storage, two of your readers (Letters, Dec 23) seek to assure us that everything is OK and perfectly tickety-boo, as all the highly-toxic nuclear waste we have produced up until now is “safely stored in specialised containers in deep caverns”. Phew, no need to worry then. That must however mean that the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management isn’t correct in stating that the only geological disposal facility in the world is in the US and that it only takes US defence-related waste? It’s also not correct then that most of the UK’s nuclear waste is distributed among numerous surface storage tanks, with most of it stashed at the Sellafield site? Perhaps they’ve got the problem sorted in France, as one of the letters confidently predicts? Maybe non! They still haven’t found a permanent home for their growing pile of highly radioactive waste either. The waste sits in heavily guarded storage at nuclear company Areva’s La Hague reprocessing plant in Normandy. So how much would a high-level geological disposal facility in the UK cost? Estimates are currently around £12bn for one facility but a discussion paper produced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change indicates a second cannot be ruled out. That’s on top of the £73bn that the National Audit Office estimates it would cost to decommission the UK’s existing ageing nuclear power stations, never mind building a new load. Perhaps we should start a whip-round! BLEDDYN LAKE Bathford, Bath Cultural chance SIR – Following the success (several years ago) of Scotland’s second city (Glasgow) being the European Capital of Culture, and last year’s success of Liverpool doing the same thing for England, isn’t it time that Wales followed suit? There is so much going on in the www.swansea2020.com campaign, that I think it is the ideal time for our second city to show its hand and apply for the honour. I did hear a rumour that Cardiff had already applied, but isn’t it the case that a country’s capital city is exempt? This is planned to be a social history of this famous name, which unfortunately is no longer with us. He did not explain for what purpose or why the English, and no-one else, make denigrating jokes about the Welsh. Some of his list of what was wrong with the Welsh “nationalist” (which he could not describe as Quislings, traitors, fifth columnist etc) were: “Never lived out or worked outside the country, obsessed with cultural and national identity, no sense of humour, suspicious villagers distrustful of outsiders, babbling an incomprehensible language” – which shows how some English monoglots have been neutered from understanding the language that they use. It is ironic that some clowns say that we should be proud of being “British”, when the Welsh are kept legally deprived and inferior in their own country in order to make the English the master race in Wales. History has shown that those who have laws for others which they would not have for themselves are judged by history to be morally insane. RT JONES Penygroes, Gwynedd Disability muddle SIR – The Government’s proposal to make people on disability benefit work for it is ludicrous. Much like their proposal to pay individuals and companies up to £50,000 to employ one person on disability is unworkable. Being on disability allowance myself, I recently applied for help to get back into work at my local Jobcentre (Neath) and was told that I would have to wait five weeks to see a (disability to work) adviser, as they only employed one adviser part time. NIGEL BILLS Swansea Global warning SIR – A regular reader of these letters pages might be led to believe that the recent cold spell casts doubt on the science of climate change. It does not. According to the Met Office, the global temperature for 2000 to 2008 now stands almost 0.20°C warmer than the average for the decade 1990-1999. As carbon dioxide levels have risen, so have global temperatures. The variations that occur from year to year are significantly influenced by the cooling (La Niña) and warming (El Niño) events in the tropical Pacific. Last year was, as predicted by the Met Office, cooler as a result of a strong La Niña, while 1998 was particularly warm as a result of a strong El Niño. The fact that 1998 is the warmest year on record does not mean that the world is cooling. Ten of the warmest years on record have, in fact, occurred since 1997. The trend is, as predicted by climate scientists, definitely upwards. Scientists have recently reported temperature rises of up to 50°C in the Arctic, with ice melting much faster than anticipated. The real concern today is that we are under-estimating the threat posed by climate change and failing to implement polices to address it.
