Hire the "Right" Employees and Cut the Baggage

Have you ever noticed the only planes you read about in the paper are the ones that
crash?

This is similar to when your company loses a client. Think back on an occasion when a
long-standing client went with a competitor because of one bad experience. You might
have given them 98-percent customer satisfaction, but that 2 percent made the headlines
and grabbed their attention.

How do we avoid such occurrences?

Employ the right staff, that’s how! People are not your biggest asset; the right people are!
For instance, I bet you have at least one employee on board that you know should be cut
loose? I also bet you are procrastinating because you feel, “he/she is getting by, and it
would be too much effort to hire someone else.”

Why do we, as hiring managers, keep shooting ourselves in the foot?

You should never compromise. Keeping those underperformers is contaminating the star
performers. The only way to strengthen the employees who are achieving is not to weigh
them down with the staff that is not. When managers are reluctant to sever ties with the
wrong employees it takes away from the time and energy spent on developing the right
employees.

Don’t let the wrong employees cost you clients, or even worse, star performers.
