Sourcecon Spring 2017!! Day 1 Morning Sessions

The morning session of day1 consisted of Intro to Machine Learning by Summer Husband, AI in Search by Glen Cathey.

First, up Summer Husband, the first thing I would like to say is Summer is one of the smartest people I have ever heard. She is scary smart and yet knows how to make so us mere mortals can understand it. She started out with a great intro to Machine Learning (ML), how it works, application in recruiting etc. She showed how ML is all around us, Netflix, Amazon, etc. You know where you go looking to buy something and then see recommendations, that is all ML. She then goes into some examples of how ML and predictive analysis go hand in hand.  The machine learning process itself is simple; input-algorithm-output. Now how does this apply to recruiting? Well let's say you have the resumes of 10 people who you had hired and who have been outstanding, You can feed all that info into an ML, have it use an algorithm to analyze the info, and the output would be the main characteristics these people had that allowed them to succeed. This then becomes your blueprint. Great stuff.

Next up Glen Cathey and AI in Search. Now first thing Glen who is one of the best in our industry called this years ago. That being AI and ML and such. Some of the things he discusses are; Information retrieval and the art of creating the right string. He discusses some of the types of searches; Keyword/title, Conceptual, implicit, semantic, and indirect. Search vs Discovery, Search is “the action of knowing what  you want until you find it” while

Discovery is “when the universe (or an organization or a Friend) helps you encounter

something you didn’t know you were looking for” Very prophetic.  TOOL TIME “Textio is a

machine learning platform for writing. Hiring teams who maintain a Textio Score of 90 or

higher attract an applicant pool that is on average 24% more qualified and 12% more

diverse—and they do it 17% faster than their competition.” TOOL TIME “Crystal Knows has

developed a proprietary personality detection technology leveraging NLP and ML in the

Harvard Innovation Lab. Crystal analyzes public data to tell you how you can expect any given

person to behave, how he or she wants to be spoken to, and perhaps more importantly, what

you can expect your relationship to be like.
