Do You Need Pinterest in Your Marketing Arsenal?

I’ve been trying to figure out what Pinterest, a virtual bulletin board of recipes, diy projects, paint swatches and style tips has to do with the business of recruiting.

And I really haven’t come up with a good answer...

Gregg Dourgarian of Staffing Talk did a search for “hiring” on Pinterest (see his results).

He came up with hiring infographics, articles, videos and cartoons.

Mildred Talabi did a search for “resume" (see her results).

She came up with a slew of job seekers posting visual resumes, mostly creative types who know their way around graphics.

So corporate HR, recruiters, and candidates are using Pinterest to share statistics, resources, and resumes.

But, should recruiting firms be scrambling to open an account on Pinterest?

If you have great resources - like stats, articles and whitepapers - and pair them with a great visualization, you’re going to get attention whether you are on Pinterest or not.

An article from TalentMinded predicts that online video will take up 90% of internet traffic by 2013.

While Pinterest is a hot trend that isn’t going to fade anytime soon, the more important takeaway is building awareness of online consumption trends.

Forget About Pinterest

I doubt that Pinterest is the next uncharted territory for candidates. If they’re on Pinterest, they’re likely already contributing on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

What Pinterest really shows us is that people like a great visualization, whether it’s a photo, drawing, or infographic.

I’d worry less about how to use Pinterest, and more about how you can use your resources to appeal to a wider audience. Adding video, infographics, and other visualizations to your best content is going to help it go viral, generating brand awareness. Others will post it, tweet it, and pin it for you.

The challenge is not figuring out how to use Pinterest, but how to rethink the way you present your content to keep up with online consumption trends.

I've tried using it for job posts with no success. I've given up and use it sparingly to Pin about products and skylines http://pinterest.com/darrylrmsg/

If you find a use - please share. I'm lost.
