Strategic Planning: The Key Concept and Process

Businesses without proper strategic planning often tend to stall. Having proper strategic planning helps businesses avoid the stall and prepare for fundamental changes. An accidental success is dangerous, although succeeding without a plan is possible, these examples only exist of businesses that achieve financial success.

Strategic planning helps the organization set priorities, strengthen operations, focus on the energy and resources and ensures that the employees and stakeholders work towards the same goal that is set. It is a set of disciplined effort producing fundamental decisions and actions that further help shape the organizational goals. An organization having an effective business strategic plan can help articulate where the organizational goals are leading to and what will be the outcome with a focus oriented towards the future.

Strategy planning involves effective communication with the organization, their goals, the actions that are required to achieve these goals including other elements progression during the planning process.

The Management and Execution - Business Strategy

It is a mandate for organizations to have a comprehensive collection of activities, processes that can be used to systematically coordinate and keep them in sync with the organizations' mission and vision. The strategic management activities help transform these plans into a system providing strategic performance feedback that further helps in decision making. The strategy execution is almost like strategy management that helps in systematic implementation.

The Key Steps involved in Strategy Planning

There are certain frameworks and methodologies involved in strategic planning and management, however, there is no absolute rule that is required for the right framework or methodology. Almost most of the organizations follow a similar kind of pattern having a common attribute. Let us have a look at them.

  • Analysis/Assessment - apprehending the current and ongoing scenario
  • Formulation of the strategy - high-level strategy planning is implemented and the basic level strategy plan is documented
  • The Execution - the high-level strategy plan is then translated into operational planning
  • The Evaluation - this phase is also called as the sustainment phase in which ongoing refinement, culture, performance evaluation, data reporting, strategic management issues, and communications generally occurs.

Business Strategy: The Key Concepts

  • In most cases, the process is strategic since it includes a selection of how best can one respond to certain circumstances of a hostile or dynamic environment.
  • Since it is systematic, one needs to follow a process that is already structured.
  • This helps structure a proper pathway towards acquisition and the allocation of resources.
  • Certain priorities need to be checked.
  • Strategic planning is all about establishing commitment.

Irrespective of the organizations' size, the greatest degree of strategic planning includes close observation on why the organization exists and why several people are interested in giving a commitment to such purpose to a level that they’re even willing to work to make it flourish.

Having an effective and successful strategic planning facilitates the focus of the organization. This involves transparency regarding the organizations' mission, vision and the value it holds among key stakeholders. A roadmap is structured for the action needed to be taken, and benchmarks are being set to determine the organization's success.
