Recently I was on the Recruiting Animal show when the topic of how to spot a good job board came up. As a staunch defender of niche job sites, here are my top ten signs of a good job board. Look for these when considering posting your jobs...

1. They advertise: any good job board worth its salt will do some advertising to attract traffic. Make sure you see some google ads or ads on related content sites. Also be sure to see they are being indexed by Indeed and SimplyHired.

2. They have jobs: check to see how many jobs they have. If they just have a backfill of jobs from another site, think twice about posting.

3. Professional Design: is the design of the website clean and professional looking? If it isn't, chances are its a bad job board. A good job board invests time and money into a solid look & feel and easy to use interface for both job seekers and employers.

4. Contact Info: a good job board should have clearly displayed contact information. They should not be afraid of getting a phone call or email. Beware of sites that dont display this information.

5. Social Media Presence: these days if a job board does not have a presence on social media they risk being behind the times. The best job boards are adapting and using social media to increase their audience and engage candidates for their clients. Look for Facebook fan pages and twitter accounts.

6. They have RSS: if a job board does not have RSS feed they are behind the times in a web 2.0 world. The good job boards update their technology.

7. Solid SEO: since most job seekers start their job search at Google, its imperative that a job board show up in the first page. Reward those job boards that do by posting jobs there because they HAVE traffic. Trust me.
