Question of the day: What recruiting tool are you no longer using that you once deemed irreplaceable?

In follow up to today's RBC Daily -

On a personal note I finally made the decision to leave the ranks of Blackberry. Sorry RIM. It was a tool that I depend on regularly but unfortunately, it was no longer meeting my needs when I needed it the most. There was a time not too long ago where I couldn’t imagine running my desk without my Blackberry. So that brings up a great Question of the day: What recruiting tool are you no longer using that you once deemed irreplaceable?

The fax machine comes to mind first which I am pretty certain all us OLD recruiters will top the list with. However the phone book and a LOCKING paper filing cabinet come to mind as well.

What I've seen used less and less are directories, "ruse" calling and salesmanship.  In this day and age names and updated, detailed information about almost anyone is easy and cheap to come by.  The same is true for job seekers and job seekers are more educated in the process.  So I think the successful modern day recruiter will be the one who best utilizes these new tools, develops a rapport and trust and takes on a more long term, consultative role.

a rolodex. Remember the one on the wheel, you could either fill out the little card or staple business cards to it? Yeah I had a few of those... :)

I am finally giving up my Palm Pilot.  Yes, I am having withdrawals.

I changed from "pump" cards (index cards/rolodex) when I went techie with my Palm Pilot!  I sometimes miss using the fax and in somew cases my clients fax me stuff and want me to fax them! How wierd.

I don't lock file cabinets a nymore but i do thumb print secure my computer!

You got something better coming anyways Cora ; )

Thanks for the great answers and feedback on today's question as always everyone.

Yellow page advertising is down to a bold line listing instead of a fancy ad.  Who uses the yellow pages anymore unless you are looking for a plumber.  Phone books in general are gathering dust.  Laptop has gone into semi retirement since i got the ipad.

Tape, glue and White-Out.  We needed to use them to hide the candidates' information before we fax out their resumes!

Yes, then I may get rid of my smart phone!

I no longer have an ashtray full of butts on the desk - and a cloud of smoke hovering over the bullpen.  And back in "those days" a pack of smokes most certainly was a tool of the trade.  :(
