I think the challenge for FB will always be that it's more of a true "social, social" network where linkedin is a "business, business" social network.

Agreed - there's a reason many companies will have FB blocked from access at work but not LinkedIn. It's the social vs professional network issue as you mentioned Christopher.

While I don't deny that FB as a recruiting tool can/does work for some companies; there's a reason why Facebook's login page talks about connecting you with the people in your life whereas LinkedIn webpage header is "World's Largest Professional Network".

I connect with and share things on Facebook because that is the venue for the sometimes/often pointless status updates and pictures. The friends and other people I connect with on Facebook probably don't care to see the jobs I have to fill just as your LinkedIn network could probably give a hoot about what interesting outfits you saw while people watching at the mall.

It is kinda funny though, depending on what type of work you have, the company might have more incentive for you to be on Facebook instead of Linkdin.  Think about work place allowing access to Linkdin, for you to network for your next job....kind ironic you are denied access social network, but allowed access to professional network where recruiters are plentiful.

just sayin

I definitely see how all of these are valid points. Facebook has been thus far the "social network", but I certainly see it shifting more towards becoming professional as well as social. For instance the "Lists" option makes it extremely easy to put all of your co workers and bosses and past colleagues in a list and you can have those people only see your basic information and that is all. That way they aren't bombarded with daily check-ins and random photos. I know that many of the people I know do have colleagues and co workers as Facebook friends, and interact with them on Facebook rather than LinkedIn, even though that is a professional relationship. I see a great potential of Facebook becoming the site that is for social and professional networking needs and I think it would be much more convenient for one site to take care of both, instead of having to make multiple accounts and remember to check multiple sites. Plus, from a recruiters standpoint, you cannot beat a network of 850 million users...
