Comment on: Topic 'How would you find your "dream" candidate when hiring a recruiter?': acteristics that are and have always been in short supply, yet essential to being an effective HR/recruiting professional. For the most part, this looks like a description of emotional intelligence and work-ethic required to be considered competent. I took a look at your webcast (narrative) and enjoyed the content as well. The only "critique" I would offer is I found the generational segment took away from the overall quality and momentum of your message. Perhaps it's just (my own) intense fatigue with that entire topic, but anytime ANY reference to gen this or that shows up it immediately drags the intellectual value way down for me. Had that not been included, I think the entire presentation would have conveyed a more powerful call to action. Topic: You're Fired.: for a reason." or "You will see, it will be for the better." I guess I could have berated and belittled, or chastised but that just isn't how I roll. She was hurt, confused, depressed, penitent, sorrowful, and scared. But mostly, she was humble. That was actually the word she used. Humble. How many of us use that word when describing ourselves or our work? I know that I often feel overwhelmed and under-qualified to pump out the work that is required to stay afloat in business these days, but each day I do, and each day I strive for that evasive perfection - like that white stag in Narnia. Every once in a while, I catch a glimpse of its tail as it runs into the brush. I often feel I will never ride upon its fair back or gaze into its soft brown eyes - the eyes of success. The young woman had been a supervisor overseeing forty customer service representatives in a call center. She had been recently promoted to this position, having successfully navigated interviews and applications that lined her promotional process. Promoted just two weeks ago, it was her responsibility to take over "escalated calls" and "intense exchanges of communication" both written and over the phone. Her downfall? She accidentally sent an internal email to a customer. That's it. No foul language was used, no derogatory terms, just a few details about her personal findings in an "escalated incident." When she discovered her mistake, she immediately went to her supervisor and revealed what had happened. She was escorted to her desk where she packed her scant belongings and was removed from the premises. Due to an unbendable rule, she was terminated immediately. How many of us carelessly hit the send button every day? How many of us have said careless words that derailed someone's work or caused more labor? The mistake can be simple, but its impact can be distressing and life-changing, as in this young woman's case. No, she did not commit an egregious error or threaten a life, she simply broke a strict rule. Check your verbiage. Adjust your stance. Clear your throat. Kick the dust off your shoes. Pop your knuckles. Whatever you need to do to weigh in and stay humble. True humility is not self-effacing - it is recognizing your small place in a huge world that can easily go on without you, and yet aware that you could not possibly go on without it. He arrived home safely but an uneasy feeling settled in..., Actually, it was more like a chronic ache that developed into a sharp pain. His abdomen felt like it was on fire and nausea ensued - was he really nauseous or was the hurt that severe? When the pain grew so intense that it was no longer tolerable, the decision was made to call the paramedics. They arrived in time to transport him to the hospital where a G-I team was waiting to diagnose the problem. Antibiotics seemed the course of action, until well after midnight it was decided to move forward with exploratory surgery and thank God they did. Ruptured colon. Seriously. A long-misdiagnosed gastro-intestinal issue finally reached a poisonous level, became life-threatening and every breath, death-defying. My friend nearly died this past weekend. Emergency surgery to remove part of his colon became a necessity and the holidays just a passing occurrence. Consumed by thoughts of his children and wife, associates and clients, life had instantly changed. That quickly, within six hours. I sat with him for a couple hours yesterday - we talked about life, about his kids, about missing Christmas - he won't be going home for a while, and also shared a few laughs. As I made ready to depart, proving that his sense of humor was still intact, he said, "I guess I will have to end every sentence with a semi-colon now." I left happy to see him alive but worry had settled in my heart. That instant awaits each of us. Unable to really prepare, how will you face it? We each run here or there, not thinking of the simplest thing - the next breath - how precious it is. And how easily it can be taken away. You often hear, "On their deathbed, no one ever wished they had spent more time at the office." But I bet they do say, "I wish I had done better or more right by my customers/clients/employees/employer/family/friends. Every day you have the chance for a great gift, to look back or forward and see what life would be like without you and every day, the opportunity to realize that you really do have a wonderful life.
