Topic: Life in the Quiet: light to Steamboat Springs, where I stayed at a ski lodge for five days. I don’t ski and I had never been to Steamboat Springs. Why would I go somewhere I had never been, away from everything I knew and loved? I think it was the anonymity that appealed to me. The just showing up with three books in tow and planting my butt in a comfy chair by a roaring fireplace twice the size of me. No one I knew had been there before; it was my escape. Every day, I watched skiers and snowboarders race down several hills that dropped right in front of the humongous picture window where I spent my days. I slept in, read books, and ordered quesadillas and hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps for lunch - everyday. No one questioned me or wondered why I was alone. I was just thankful to have some time to re-group and re-focus before I faced the major changes ahead of me: my father’s death, my impending divorce and a job change. Stressed? You could say so. Life in the quiet – that’s what I called my time in Steamboat Springs. Sometimes, you just have to take or make the time in order to instigate a recovery, of sorts. At different times in our lives we are the skiers, taking familiar trails, using poles for stability. Other times we are the snowboarders, daringly plowing our way down an unfamiliar path, seemingly fearless and ready for adventure. Then there are the days when you simply sit back and watch the worker bees and the adventurers as they attack life, take risks, and jump on the business opportunities that line their way. Taking a break assists in maintaining balance that many claim to have down pat. The one thing I have to consistently work to maintain is balance. I love to work. I love to play. And I usually have to remind myself to take that down time and to learn to relax. It is fear that motivates me. Stay busy. Make work happen. Give as much as you can. Topic: The Art of Execution: assembling cubicles and creating sawdust piles everywhere. The day was spent looking at each piece and realizing it wasn't what we thought, certain items were smaller than the office furniture showroom led us to believe and the projected stability was a bit less than. That doesn't mean we weren't excited but what it does mean is that reality didn't quite live up to the imagination and expectation. Welcome to real life, right? Planning, preparing, predicting all lead to something. These three actions build to a plateau that either works (good execution) or doesn't work (poor execution). I reviewed some information yesterday that confirms my stance on preparation. It doesn't matter how much you plan or prepare, if you fail to implement, it is all for naught. Execution is putting a plan into action by applying power to accomplish the mission and using situational understanding to assess progress and make execution and adjustment decisions. Translating decisions into actions. It all sounds very Sun Tzu, doesn't it? The Art of War has been applied to business for years and the truth is, business is war. The war to win clients/customers. The battle to stay at the top of your game. The hostilities that competition brings out and defines the true warrior. The inner struggle to change the way you do things when the old ways no longer work. The Art of War in action, indeed. There were three bullet points defined in the information I received that I wish to share (use them how you will and so will I): • Seize and retain the initiative. • Build and maintain momentum. • Exploit success. Each of these three can be specifically applied to your work day and if carried out will lead to further success. It isn't enough to name a course of action. It isn't enough to plan that course of action. Only when you execute and carry out the plan/action will there be a success to exploit and share with others. Dominance in any field comes only through the following steps; whether you are recruiting or building a ship, you have to have a plan and follow through. 1. Develop a course of action. 2. Topic: Why I Love Recruiting: helping others. Every time I sat down to write, my thoughts drifted to a little girl named Kelsey. When Kelsey was 3 years old she went to the doctor for her annual checkup. At first Kelsey’s mom didn’t think she had anything to worry about – Kelsey was slower than her siblings in most areas, but every kid is different. Then there were these weird birthmarks. Turns out that Kelsey had Neurofibromatosis – or NF. The delayed speech, muscle weakness, and café au lait spots (those weird birthmarks) are all symptoms. No parent ever wants to imagine their child with an illness – certainly not a genetic anomaly that can cause tumors to grow on their nerve endings, or cause developmental delays and learning disabilities. No parent wants to hear that their child may not be able to play sports, ride a bike, or even read and write like everyone else. Luckily Kelsey’s mom was a recruiter. All of a sudden those long days, evening and weekend candidate meetings, early morning calls and other wacky scheduling all made sense. Recruiting has never been a 9-5 time clock punching sort of job. So when Kelsey needed an MRI, mom could take her. When Kelsey started occupational AND physical therapy, mom could take her twice a week. When Kelsey finished her first year of school mom was able to lobby hard and schedule meeting after meeting with the teachers and administration to make sure she got a 2nd year of Kindergarten, not wanting her to move up before she was ready. And then there’s the money. You’d be amazed at how much of this stuff is not covered by insurance. So when the therapy bills started rolling in Kelsey’s family didn’t go bankrupt. Recruiting can be a lucrative business. Thanks to the incredible, crazy roller coaster that is recruiting, Kelsey’s mom was able to arrange her schedule to be at the physical therapy appointment when 6 year old Kelsey rode a tricycle for the first time. I love recruiting because it gave Kelsey’s family the financial stability and schedule flexibility to take care of their youngest daughter.
