I received an email from Dave Mendoza containing the follow about his Linkedin group; “Previously you confirmed your membership with "Six Degrees", however, due to recent changes at Linkedin, we have experienced technical difficulties which require us to re-invite every member today. It's a long story and one that has been very stressful. I will share more as developments unfold”
I am also an administrator for a Linkedin group and although the group didn’t loose its entire membership, a few are missing or least the total # of members has decreased.
Has anyone else experienced an issue with regard to a Linkedin Group? Maybe folks are having to reduce their Linkedin groups down to 20 and this is a result?
Yes, I noticed some changes too. My group was deleted after LinkedIn refreshed their site last night. The Group section is much improved. Shortly after I sent their CS an email my group was back online. Things seem to be back to normal now.
Don't start me off again! If only LI communicated with us in a way that sold their changes to us it would be more palletable. They are acting in a very high handed way and Im losing faith after 4 years of building up my network and groups.... more fool them I say
I see nothing with the "upgrade" that has helped me.
-I do not see those in the group not my 1st level connection
-I do not see member email addresses
-When doing an "export current members" email addresses appear for those added before the upgrade but not after.
Linkedin is now acting like a bitter cynical old man chasing kids out of his front yard. A front yard that for years his wife had invited the neighborhood children to play in. Through the years these neighborhood children had helped manicure the grass, pick weeds out of the flower bed and raked leaves in the fall. So maybe a couple of kids from another neighborhood came into the yard and took a couple pears off the pear tree. Well, this pissed off the old man. As a result the old man put up a fence with a gate and a list of rules next to the gate. These rules banned those kids who brought too many friends to the yard. These rules demanded that kids in his yard not associate with too many kids from other neighborhoods. These rules would not allow the children to continue to play the way they had played for so many years with his beautiful wife.
You know what happens to bitter cynical old men like these? They end up divorced living by themselves with an overgrown lawn and a weed infested flower bed filled with dead roses. The only visitors these bitter cynical old men get are mailmen delivering bills and bad news.
LI has progressed over the years from a social/semi-professional network to a database and finally it is starting to become “yard with an overgrown lawn and with weeds throughout the garden”. The worst part, as Maren alluded to, is that the “El Kid” that did so much to develop this yard now has to jump the fence.
I’m lucky I am the administrator of a LI group with only 750 members so only a few of my friends have been banned, un-like “El Kid”, who had his entire trainload of friend kicked out.
Now some lyrics laid down by a few Canadians back in 1971:
And the sign says "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I put my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine outstanding young man, I think you'll do
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that, huh, me working for you"
Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs
Fuckin' up the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign
And the sign says "Anybody caught trespassing will be shot on sight"
So I jumped the fence and I yelled at the house
Hey! What gives you the right!
To put up a fence and keep me out, or to keep Mother Nature in
If God was here, he'd tell it to your face, man, you're some kind of sinner
Oh, say now mister, can't you read
You got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat
You can't watch, no you can't eat, you ain't supposed to be here
And the sign says "You got to have a membership card to get inside" - uh!
And the sign says "Everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray"
But then they passed around a plate at the end of it all
And I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own fuckin' sign
I said, "Thank you Lord for thinking 'bout me, I'm alive and doing fine", oh
Thank you Five Man * Electrical * Band!
Ahhhh, Linkedin.com “Love it or Leave it!”
I feel better, sorry to use up so much space but it's Friday night and it's just after beer thirty!
Thank you for your post on this LinkedIn.. I had to rejoin many groups because of this... however I am clearly not aware of Linkedin groups now down to "20"?? Headache.. and I join the rant.. I am not impressed with LinkedIn at the moment. Thank you for all of your information and discussion.
Thanks Paul...I guess we can belong to more groups than I thought, I cut mine to 20 and the last 3-4 were tough. I don't join a group for the logo; my hope was that the groups would help create a community within LI that would actually promote interaction. Even as the administrator of the group I'm not aware of a way to send a message to the entire group all at once. Paul, maybe you do? Do Tell?
Thanks Gijs...Good to hear LI isn't providing headaches for you.
PS - fyi ~~ I get headaches from just about anything LOL.. and I always do have my advils in handy... but LinkedIn did threw me off a little bit.. I am sure everything will work itself out... as I do find LinkedIn quite effective most of the times.
I just received and email from halfway around the world, from you guessed it, Shally who is in Singapore-) He was responding to my inquiry regarding LI groups. A simple explanation is; the growth LI has experienced and still experiencing may be pushing the limits of the platform/tool. Shally expects positive change as a result of this growth and encouraged me to “keep the faith”. I am always open to change but as Gavin stated early on in this discussion, it’s lack of communication from Linkedin regarding these changes which is so frustrating. RBC experienced some changes over the last 24 hours; those changes and the effects were posted/communicated on the main page. RBC is just one slouch sitting around on “vacation”;) c’mon LI.
