Topic: Guess What? I Don't Have a Golden Lasso: two women, marries them both and then proceeds to create two totally separate lives for himself by setting up two households on the opposite sides of town. The story moves from one crazy scene to the next, every time John seemingly getting away with his continual cover-up. Of course, it comes crashing down in the final scenes when the two wives unwittingly find out about each other. It is comedy at its finest. I have often thought about this show over the years as I have juggled two or three jobs at a time. When I first joined the recruiting industry, I was also the athletic coach for girls' sports at my local junior high, as well as still keeping a part-time job in the dental field. Three jobs and five classes at the local college - oh..., and dare I forget -> single mom to four children. About six months into this crazy schedule, the managing director at the search firm where I worked pulled me aside and said, "Please quit your other jobs, I need you here full-time. I will pay you a decent salary and the craziness in your life will ease up somewhat." I thought about it for about two minutes then became very excited at the prospect of a simpler life (still waiting for that to happen, ha!). Then because I had been with my dentist for thirteen years, I carefully planned out my resignation for a few months later when a seasonal rush would be over. Believe it or not, dentists do have crazy, rush seasons - the summer months and the entire month of December. Parents never want to take their kids out of school to visit the dentist. One would think that after this, I would have learned my lesson, no such luck. I have consistently had more than one job for many years - that is, until recently. I coached my final season of volleyball last fall. It was a tough decision but the right one. I also closed out my last consulting client in February and I am seriously a one-company woman now. Spreading oneself too thin can result in half-produced results and half-headed focus with a heaping helping of half-hearted devotion. The most important thing for me was to recognize my worth. I don't know about you but this will be a lifelong process for me. It is very difficult for me to say "no" mostly because I don't want to; I like saying "yes." It just feels good to me. Weights and measures remind me that I don't really have a golden lasso or bullet-deflecting wristbands. I am just a mom that loves to work and needs to write. Find another industry, there are companies out there begging for help who do not have internal recruiters. Technology is utilitzed by outside recruiters the same way the internal kids use it and a lot of the time better. YOu are working defeated before you start which is why this clap trap appeals to you. It's reinforcing your defeat and convincing you that it's impossible to make placements. It's not. There have been times when there were so many jobs that clients would pay a fee for a warm body who could walk and carry a pencil. There were times before when there flat weren't many jobs. Nothing new except right now there are jobs and there are people who want them. If you are too beat up at this point to find them and sell them then go internal with somebody. Half the damn world is looking for internal recruiters. You certainlly have the street cred to go that direction. @ Drue, in my opinion you don't have a clue what you are talking about. Good recruiting is not the boiler room bullshit you described in your blog. That is obviously where you came from so you don't know any differently. You throw around ridiculous percentages that who the hell knows where you get them. OUt of your butt i suppose. I am in touch myself with many, many contingent recruiters on a weekly basis. None of us cut fees, if our close rate were 20% we would be asleep or on an extended vacation. None of us are burned out except maybe Bill who just needs to pick his ass up and do something differently instead of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It's obvious to me that you burned out yourself. You moved over into retained search so you can whittle and diddle around and get paid for it while not making many placements. Good for you. If that makes you happy that's dandy. There is certainly a place for retained search and the people who like it. You remind me of a born again druggie who is convinced because he hit the wall everybody else has and is convinced that everybody else needs to climb on his bandwagon cause it's the only truth and light. Rat Crap. My thiks You are just preaching your "drunkalog" to convince yourself that not making many placements is ok because you get paid to try. That's all a steer can do. The contingency recruiters i know have about a 70% close rate, they like having skin in the game. I am confident that i can speak for thousands of us, we don't want out of contingency. We'll take a retained if we want to kick back and play for a while. Most of us like the competition. We like selling and we sure aren't marginalized. Ask our clients , we have a lot of them. And for the record, your comment, "If you are talking to unemployed people you are going to end up unemployed", is about the most arrogant, condecending remark i have seen in print in 35 years. of recruiting. Don't get invested in something just because you thought it was great idea. Don't reinvent the wheel. Ask somebody who has a lot of experience if something has ever been done before (most things have been tried) find out if it worked or didn't and why. Anybody can handle the mountain tops. Handling the valleys is the test of long term success. Doing the wrong thing longer and harder does not make it work. Hard work at the wrong thing is like keeping your nose to the grindstone rough and holding it down there long enough so that the only thing you end up with is you, your stone and your effin bloody nose. Prior and proper preparation prevents piss poor performance. If you don't know what you are talking about, shut up. Metrics are wonderful. They don't pay the bills. If you spend too much time counting shit you dont' have time to shovel it. If business were easy everybody would own their own. When you first start you don't know squat but you think you do. Watch the guys who have been a success and try to improve on what they do that is working. If you hit a brick wall, don't back up and keep running at it. Figure out a way to get around it. The wall doesn't have a brain, you do, use it. Show up. No matter how talented you are, if you aren't there you will fail. If you give a party and nobody comes it's not a party it's a failed attempt at something. Dont' try to give a party if you already know nobody is going to come. An unprofitable transaction can lead to the next one being profitable. Sometimes a loss leader item builds return business. Dont' give away the farm just for the pleasure of a transaction but don't labor under the misconception that everything you ever do is going to be profitable. Trying to sell somebody an apple when they want an orange just convinces them that all you know about is apples, you don't like oranges or you are too damn stupid to know the difference. If you only have an apple eat it and go find an orange. Check you ego at the door. Big egos are only appreciated after you get to be a big shot and then not very much, you just get to be known as a successful A$$hole. Quit worrying about business rules. Go to work, watch, listen and learn, try it, if you fail, shake it off, learn from it and do something different the next time. Topic: READY, SET...SMACK! IT'S A NEW YEAR.: art gearing up with lists of things that are going to get done ...early...right, early. Now, being a night person my idea of early is to stroll into the office at 10:30 A.M. put my head down, grab the phone, hit email and not look up until about 7:30 P. M. Then it's off to the horse barn for an hour or two and back to work in my home office until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. No alarm clocks that function at my house. So the queen decided to turn over a new leaf and get to the office no later than 9:00. Make it an organized year. Good plan, great plan in fact. Get in bed early and forego watching reruns of "Numbers" at 3:00 A.M. Figure out my Monday morning costume so we (that's the royal "We") don't change clothes three times and shoes four or five before launching the recruiting blitz. Call the dentist, call the farrier, check bank balances, pay bills, Focus, update, give a damn,source, present and start the year off like rolling thunder. Ole! Charge! Let's hit it and get it! Uh Huh. Great Plans in my world always seem to derail before they can bloom, much less come to fruition. Here's how it really went on my first day back for second semester. As i switched off the light around midnight, the phone rang. A friend had just decided that Christmas being over she would drop it on her spouse that she was filing for divorce first thing in the morning. (That would be my super Monday morning only a few hours away) Albeit this plan had been in the works for months, emotion was running wild with logic far in the backstretch. What i said, "You are pretty emotional, if you are not sure about this you can always give it some more thought before you take action." What i wanted to say, " Gawddamnit, it's midnight, i'm turning over a new leaf this year, how about you take a chill pill and we'll talk when the sun comes up. You just have the predawn crazies." That one put on hold i settled in for serious sleep to prepare for the turning of the new leaf. Wrong. Twenty minutes into dozing the Great Pyr and the Standard Poodle decided that staying up all night as we normally do with me at the computer and reruns of "Numbers going they would have a serious disagreement over a chew bone. What i said, " STOP, you guys are pretty emotional, how about you both take a chill pill get in your crates and let's not take anymore action." What i wanted to say, "Gawddammit, it's 1:00 in the morning if you don't stop it both of you are going outside in the cold till spring. Your pal here is turning over a new leaf . Back to pillows..ring, ring. My nutty next door neighbor is screaming that his smoke alarm is going off and he wants to know if my townhouse is full of smoke. What i said: "No it's your smoke alarm that is going off not mine." "You are pretty emotional just think a minute." "Did you turn on the auto clean on your oven again and forget that you turned it on?" "Well turn the thing off, open the doors and turn off the smoke alarm before you take any further action. What i wanted to say: "Gawddammit, it's 2:00 in the morning you lunatic, you do this four or five times a year and always call me. If God had wanted me to be a firefighter he would given me a big red hat and and an axe." "I am turning over a new leaf " So take a chill pill and i'll see if i can escape before you catch me to tell me about it when the sun comes up. So it was "Numbers" until 4:30, coffee maker blew a fuse, got dressed in the dark, even glued on false eyelashes with a flashlight and off to the office. New leaf intact i started the administrivia of bills and banking to be ready to CHARGE when everybody else got to the office. What followed was about four early phone calls from clients and 10 or so from candidates who had decided they were turning over new leaves themselves and i was the first victim on their collective lists. It was not yet 8:30 A.M. much less my normal late morning before i answer the phone time. What i said: "I hate to hear that you... lost or going to lose/fire a top employee/ got fired or quit/going to quit your, job. Send me your job description/resume and let's see what we can do to get the ball rolling. You are pretty emotional , don't take any action yet. let's talk after i get the paperwork." What i wanted to say: "Gawddammmmitt, i am trying to turn over a new leaf here, i am never in the office this early and now i damn well know why. All you loonies must have real light in your houses, no friends or neighbors or dogs that keep you up all night. I bet you don't have on one black shoe and one brown shoe and i bet your right eyelash is not hanging at half mast so you look like you have either been on a ten day drunk or you went to a party as a pirate and forgot to take off the makeup. I am going to take a chill pill, go home, change shoes, glue my eyelash back on or take the other one off and start all over now that the sun has come up. CHARGE will have to be something that happens on my credit card today cause it's after noon and no leaves have been turned over, just piled up in a pile. So much for turning over a new leaf. I am going in at 10:30 in the morning, i am going to enjoy the 3:00 AM reruns of "Numbers". Dogs are more fun to play with at night, they sleep all day. I will decide what i am going to wear tomorrow when it falls out of my closet, so what if i change shoes five times. 86 on the eyelashes. I can get the bills paid before they turn everything off. Who needs lists. Let's just roll with it as it comes. God made me an independent recruiter so i can talk to upset people all night and all day and enjoy solving problems. What's a chew bone or two amongst dogs, friends, neighbors, candidates and clients. If God had meant for me to go to bed and get up with the chickens he would never have invented the electric light bulb.
