One of the most professionally rewarding experiences for me is the opportunity to mentor students on career choices. I love wide-eyed, the world is an oyster, enthusiasm. I received a tweet last night from a UCBerkeley Psych and Linguistic double major student contemplating a career in HR - specifically recruiting - I decided to come here to help her with her choices by invoking the power of all of us to answer her question.

"Hi Karla, how'd you get started in HR? and most HR asst… Continue

Tales from the script : another dose of stupidity

From time to time (weekly?) I get see to some rather incredibly funny things we humans do. The job is rife with it. For fun I thought I'd post this stupidity. Most of it has a lesson to it. About like the old Aesop's fables do. Usually in the form of life slapping you hard enough that we actually listen.

So for amusement may I present to you this weeks ignorance.

The following is an actual email I received awhile back. It is from our consultant we had recruited for a nice paying… Continue

Are there such things as permanent footprints?

There's no doubt there's been plenty written on being careful when it comes to what you publish about yourself online. But when it comes to your career - you can't careful enough. Certain things that seem fun or kitchy now, might come back to bite you sooner or later. These "perma-prints" could follow you for years, maybe even the rest of your career.

Case in point, a few years ago, we had an intern working for the company from a very prestigious school's masters program. Because of… Continue

If you're in the Central Texas area and you're a technology dude or dudette, you probably already know about door64 (http://door64.com/). door64 is run by Matt Genovese (thanks Matt!!) who is a Functional Verification Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor...

Anyway, yesterday door64 held a Tech Fair at the Goodwill Center here in Ausin. They had over 1000 folks RSVP and 37 companies exhibiting. Can you say success??!! I attended the 3 sessions offered (all excellent!) but 1 entitled… Continue

What's in a name? How we screwed up naming in Newton once and why we won't ever again.

Be really (really) careful how you name things. And, NEVER use the same word to describe two different things.

Sloppy naming can lead to minor frustrations, or it can lead to some really big problems for your users. The road to sloppy naming is paved by the careless use of synonyms or by naming two different things with the same word or phrase.

First of all, let’s look at synonyms (the more obvious of the two naming blunders). When considering a naming framework for… Continue

Is Twitter a "Triumph of Humanity"?

In this article from the Business Profiles section of apple.com, Twitter is touted as a progressive, conscientious company and employer. But, as you can imagine, Apple does quite a bit of tooting its own horn. It rings a little hollow to call Twitter a “triumph of humanity” when the latter half of the article is a Mac love-fest. In the entire article, the name “Twitter” is mentioned 32 times (yes, I counted). On the other hand, “Mac”… Continue

The Client Side - Sponsorship - A Client's Perspective

Sponsorship used to be a pain to deal with. It's much worse now. In my opinion it is almost always not worth dealing with. I have people try to make the case all the time that with NAFTA, a TN Visa is no problem, but not clients. A great client took the time this week to lay out the sponsorship situation from a Canadian company taking someone from the US or another country and I thought this would be well worth sharing.

"There are 2 steps and the first is rather lengthy. A company… Continue

You have no idea how to really interview candidates

Kris Dunn wants to waterboard candidates and as a mutual fan of 24, I say it's high time we Jack Bauer potential employees (you'll notice my Jack Bauer facts on the right side of my RBC page).

I just don't call it asking for negative information as Kris puts it; what he's referring to is… Continue
