Your Intuition - Don't Let It Be a Hiring OBSTACLE

Many CEOs claim to have exceptional intuition about hiring for their executive team. “I know in my gut if someone will be a fit,” they say. Much like the stories of gamblers, who will brag about their winnings (but not tell you about their losses), you only hear about the successful hires.

Too many executive candidates today are good salespeople. They know how to create a good first impression, and hit the CEO directly in the gut with their personality, and win the job offer. A…

Tales from the Recruiter Crypt

Tales from the Crypt Tale #1 – All hope is LOST

I receive a phone call from my client; my candidate has yet to arrive for her 12pm interview. It is now 12:13pm. I immediately call the candidate, only to get her voicemail. Maybe I didn’t provide the correct details for the interview, or maybe she had an emergency that prevented her from coming to the interview. Why didn’t she answer her phone? After a few agonizing minutes the client calls to inform me that the candidate had gotten… Continue

Nix the Laundry List: Job Ads That Kill

Bad day? Boring job? Suck it up! Your customers will care less than I do

Driving into the carpark outside of my office today, I noticed something that as an employer or manager would really annoy me. This carpark has "early bird" prices, you know, in before a certain time, out after another prescribed time, for a cheaper rate. However to validate for this you need to get another ticket from the attendant. Not sure if that is the right term, as the word "attendant" to me gives me the idea of attentiveness. This particular character has none of that. He has himself… Continue

The Case for Recruiters in Today's Economy

So it's not the best of times - economically speaking.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that recruiters have hit hard times. But there are a number of significant developments that should encourage recruiters. (See the blue "hires" line from last month in the otherwise dire graph from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The BLS released several positive…

What happens in Vegas...

I’m 40 years old. Female. A Scorpio. 5’ 4.5” (yes, I included the ½ inch) and weigh 116 pounds. No, this is not a personal advertisement. I love a dog’s soft tender underbelly, extra dark chocolate, cherry red scarves, stick shift convertibles, sauvignon blanc on the beach, and Don Julio 1942 for a really good time. I donate to animal shelters, the Alzheimer’s Association and the…

Shouldn’t HR be able to recruit their own people?

A couple of days ago a Twitter acquaintance of mine Ellison Bloomfield posted in her blog the rhetorical question; shouldn’t an internal HR department have the skills and knowledge to be able to recruit their own people?

Good question. Even though it was rhetorical, I’m going to answer it anyway as it’s a pet topic of mine. My view is this; recruitment AND selection… Continue

Why Won’t You Hire Me? (Part 1)

Screaming at Laptop “You have an open position and I’ve applied, why won’t you hire me”? I’m sure most recruiters have had this conversation before. The possible answers are endless. Let’s start with one: your resume.

My first recommendation to a candidate in the day and age of online job applications is; you MUST submit a… Continue

3 Legs to Sales Success

Have you ever heard the following?

My sales reps can’t sell. They don’t prospect for new business. They can’t close. They don’t seem motivated to earn more money.

When I hear these comments from business owners, I ask 3 simple questions.

1) Do you have the right sales people?

2) Do you provide the right sales training?

3) Do you have the right sales management?

It takes all three…

The Cat Herding/HR Connection

Herding is a fine art. Sheep dogs do it. Cowboys too. Security at concerts and high profile events use herding as a part of creating order in confusing, stressful, and complicated situations.

“HR Professionals? Nope, I’m not buying it.”

Those were the exact words out of my mouth when I picked up this pin at a vendor booth at the Oklahoma Human… Continue

It's not about the deal, it's all about the individual...

About 3 years ago I met with a senior HR contact who worked for a FTSE 100. An intelligent, well-rounded and high potential individual and very charming to boot. The sort of individual who rarely stays on the market, if at all, instantly being snapped up by probably any of the other blue chip organisations.

We chatted for about 90 minutes and by the end of the discussion I had drawn a very strong conclusion – that he…

Decision making and traditional HR

Anyone who has read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell knows that what we think we know about how good decisions are made is mostly wrong. For most of the past sixty or so years the 'scientific' method has been in vogue with accountants, CFO's, purchasing departments and strategic planners (and, you guessed it, HR). Want to make a good decsion? Reach for the slide rulers (my age is showing) and the spreadsheets. List the relevant criteria, find the option that meets the greatest numbers and pull the…

Internships: The Good, the Bad and the (not so) UGLY

By iCIMS blogger, Katie Meeker

Somewhere in between cramming for finals and moving out of their dorms for the summer, college students find the time to search for a summer internship. As a former multiple-time intern-er and a current intern coordinator, I thought it might be a good idea to make this post two-fold: 1st part for potential interns and 2nd part for potential organizations looking to recruit…

Can’t Talk NOW, Too Busy Building MY Brand

The opportunities to engage and interact are two of the most often communicated benefits of using social media. While these benefits sound good in theory, I’m not sure that most users are doing a good job of taking seriously their individual responsibility to ensure these benefits are realized. Often times, people who are active on social media and social networks are too busy building their own personal brand to be bothered with 2-way conversation. If the benefits of social media are the…

A Response From My Hiring Manager

I haven't found many blog posts that allow us to hear the client/managers point of view. Well, look no further because one of mine opened up recently. I wrote a blog post about VMS and it's impact on recruiters and jobseekers. Below is a response from one of my hiring managers. I think this can be helpful to the recruiter and jobseeker alike. It reminds us to never take our clients for granted and always…

Recruiters vs HR...It's Tom & Jerry Time!!!

Recruiters vs HR...it’s as old as, well...the recruitment industry! Like cats and dogs, Tom & Jerry, there seems to be, in the UK certainly, this automatic default position of mistrust.

It’s reared its head again, with blogs appearing, including Bill Boorman’s guest post on Punk Rock HR, and no doubt discussions will be had at HRevolution.

Well I’ll let you in to a secret...it’s always been like this!… Continue

Top Ten Worst CEO Traits

Ever had an awful boss? I'll bet he or she had some or maybe most of these bad traits:

Control Junkie: Has a tough time truly delegating or letting go. Has an opinion about everything.

Being Right: Even if your boss is usually right, it feels bad to think that you are generally wrong.

Rude: Bosses too often fail to say please and thank you, and they don't take the time for basic politeness.

Gives Blame / Takes Credit: Bad… Continue

A Tale of Two Small Businesses

There are two small businesses that I frequent near my Minneapolis suburban home. The first I do so out of loyalty – they rock. The second I visit because my family wants to – despite my ongoing objections. Let’s quickly examine the difference between the two customer experiences and see what they can teach us.

Von Hanson’s Meat Market - http://www.vonhansons.com/ - feels like an old-fashioned butcher shop. The product is excellent and I…

Why (some) recruiters hate job boards

Oh, to be the new kid on the block! Twitter, Facebook, and the rest of social media are experiencing that thrill – they’re new, exciting, and can do no wrong.

A while back, job boards were the new kids. No more messy newsprint, no more limits on ad length, immediate results – what was not to like? Recruiters flocked to job boards and, in the process,

made many boards very profitable.

But things have changed. Job boards are old news, like those ugly,…
